Loudspeaker Myths: Separating the Scientific Facts from Science Fiction

Sean Olive, has, btw, commented on this article ....specifically on what he (Sean) takes to be Gene's four main issues with loudspeaker DBTs: http://www.hydrogenaud.io/forums/index.php?showtopic=105148&pid=862026&st=0&#entry862026 (NB the thread title was not Sean's , 'twas mine)

Can you hear a difference in Sound between Audio Amplifiers?

Maybe he got bored with shadowbanning? And really could not justify plain old banning? Maybe you and he 'think different'? Anyway, as I said, the guy who founded this site is the one who suggested my remarkable reputation tally was the work of a moderator. Are you saying *he* doesn't know...

Can you hear a difference in Sound between Audio Amplifiers?

I like the ones in AVRs with good 'room correction' DSP.* So far I've tried a few Pioneer Elites (MCACC) but now I've switched to Denon (Audyssey MultiXT 32) As far as the amp qua amp function -- amplifying a signal -- I'm pretty sure they should sound the same if you compare them fairly...

Can you hear a difference in Sound between Audio Amplifiers?

A cabal! I like that idea even better. Threat noted. Could it be you've got sensitive skin? Btw, since yesterday my rep went up to -18,444 . I must be doing something right. :)

Can you hear a difference in Sound between Audio Amplifiers?

This thread contains some excellent explanations why two amps compared this way might sound different. And suggestions for comparing them a more reliable way.

Can you hear a difference in Sound between Audio Amplifiers?

Gee, thanks, but I know how rep points work. Someone managed to give me -19,0000 in a very short period of time. It was Gene himself who suggested to me it was a mod gone postal...and who agreed it was a bit OTT. Do you know whether and how I failed to 'play nicely' or are you just assuming I...

Can you hear a difference in Sound between Audio Amplifiers?

Did it (the Amp face off using correct level matching and DBT) ever happen? Oh, wait, never mind. I see Gene Della Salla et al. are still classifying me as 'a forum troll idiot that just begs for attention' This was explained to me back in April (when I was told it would be fixed) as "It's...

Loudspeaker Myths: Separating the Scientific Facts from Science Fiction

There's no transparent tally of total reds/green points that I can find, so one has to wonder who and how many in the 'forum community' are responsible for my relatively recent descent to 'forum troll idiot*' status. Right now, what I can see, it's 3:2 green:red for me. Are some members of the...

Loudspeaker Myths: Separating the Scientific Facts from Science Fiction

Fascinating definition of trolling. I did, in fact, get into it with Clint over evolution. (I'm a biologist by training) I was, in fact, shadowbanned. Some nice people here got that reversed. I have, in fact, engaged Gene before on this exact topic: his overgeneralized complaints about DBTs...

Loudspeaker Myths: Separating the Scientific Facts from Science Fiction

Sean commented in the thread that was about your previous critiques of DBTs. So as I said, he has 'contributed to forum threads'. So, are you saying that the DBT sections were *not* vetted by Dr. Toole either? And that Dr. Olive hadn't seen the final version of them either? What...

Loudspeaker Myths: Separating the Scientific Facts from Science Fiction

Btw, labeling me as a 'forum troll idiot that just begs for attention' is such a classy move, Gene. Or is that Clint 'evolution? it's a hoax!' DeBoer's doing? Between this and that shadowbanning episode, I have to wonder....

Loudspeaker Myths: Separating the Scientific Facts from Science Fiction

Noticed, hence the use of the word 'schizophrenic' to describe the article in my *very first sentence* I did notice, that's exactly why I suggested you run the DBT sections by Toole (and I notice that Olive has contributed to forum threads, so he's suggested there too). Are you saying you...

Loudspeaker Myths: Separating the Scientific Facts from Science Fiction

Pretty much, yes. Blind methods can indicate whether the *reviewer* is being influenced by something beyond just the sound of the loudspeaker. To me, that's really just another 'circle of confusion' to use Floyd Toole's term. Too many unknowns relying on each other.

Loudspeaker Myths: Separating the Scientific Facts from Science Fiction

A shame this useful article has such a schizophrenic attitude to DBTs (lots of anti-DBT snark, ending with 'but actually, DBTs are the way to go'). Really, why not just run these 'mythbustings' sections about DBTs before Drs Toole or Olive first? Here's a few points I thought were...

Analog (Vinyl) vs Digital Audio (CD, FLAC) Listening Event Comparison

It demonstrated that under 'sighted' conditions (because properly blinded comparisons are only advocated by 'trolls' ), an at best loosely level-matched comparison between LPs and 'digital' (actually, Redbook digital and FLAC files of unknown format), with no actual guarantee that the formats...

Analog (Vinyl) vs Digital Audio (CD, FLAC) Listening Event Comparison

Given the conditions under which it was conducted, this was a 'comparison' simply stunning in its meaninglessness. But it will probably increase website traffic for awhile. Bravo.

    Involve Audio Surround Master Review

it should be noted that Dolby Pro Logic II in Music mode has user-variable settings for Dimension and Panorama, both of which highly affect the degree of 'surround' -ness. (And another for Center Width, though that would have been set to the extreme width -- 'phantom' or 'ghost' equivalent -...

The Insanity of Marketing Disguised as Science in Loudspeakers

The implication of Harman's work for the 'untested' brands is simply that , if compared fairly on the basis of sound alone, ones that 'measure well' in certain parameters will tend to be preferred over ones that don't, by listeners both 'trained' and 'untrained'. Happily for loudspeaker...

    That's a pity. It's well worth reading.

Can you hear a difference in Sound between Audio Amplifiers?

The protocol for audio DBT isn't set by the medical industry. It's more properly a branch of sensory testing. There are books on this stuff -- http://books.google.com/books?id=XX9xwk9G0EUC The ITU (International Telecommunication Union) also has issued elaborate (and double blind) protocols...
