Dayton 18" HO Ported Build Thread

I'm not sure who the moderator is for the DIY forum but if one of you guys could somehow unlock my previous posts in this thread I will go through and fix all of the broken image links. I got tired of paying for a domain and hosting that I was not using so I let it lapse but I still have all the...

Dayton 18" HO Ported Build Thread

The subs have served me extremely well so far. Going on about a year and a half now. Now in my own home as well and I can crank it up as loud as I can stand. The subs are a very efficient design. I used to have a pair of the kappa 12VQ subs (see sticky at the top of DIY forum for the design) I...

Dayton 18" HO Ported Build Thread

Good tip, I got out the calipers to see just how far out it was on each dimension and it is only off about 20 thousandths if the end is kept square. Not bad considering the abuse I have put that tape through over a few years of use.

Dayton 18" HO Ported Build Thread

Regarding the bracing and using dowels vs what I came up with- First, I am not a mechanical engineer and have not performed any sort of scientific resonance tests or anything on the cabinet. I simply build things which to my own eye look damn strong. I think the reason most DIY builds use dowels...

You will find some of the answers to your questions here: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/threads/build-plans-18-dayton-slot-port.93946/#post-1076296 The threaded inserts and allen head screws were from McMaster-Carr and the part numbers are in that link. The allen head screws were used...

What are the odds of hidden shipping damage?

If you opened it up and everything looks fine it should be fine. The biggest concern would be any obvious broken parts or solder joints that cracked. There is a video QSC put out where they threw some gear they make off the roof onto the pavement and used it. Including an RMX amplifier which is...

Build Plans, 18" Dayton Slot Port

Thank you, I hope my efforts can be used by others who want to build their own subs. I have thought about putting it all together in a single PDF one could download and have complete plans but so far I have not really seen the demand. I think it seems too complex for the average DIY sub builder...

    Voltage Step Converter With Amplifier?

I am confused here what you mean by making sure it is on the same phase but I am guessing this 120-240 converter with two 120 plugs is simply a rigged up 240 outlet using two 120 cords plugged into different sides of the main panel... I mean rather than a typical 240v outlet using the hot from...

I am not sure. When I set out and decided to build subwoofers I read up on the current favorite designs and the martysub was right up there at the top because it seems to be very popular. I would assume this box could work quite well for the SI driver if it works good for the dayton considering...

No, I have not set a house curve. I read the article on it over at the HTS but it seemed like it was geared more towards an analog EQ with 20 or so adjustments. Not sure where I would start setting a house curve with the DCX.. I should also add that the response with some EQ. On one subwoofer I...

Now I have had a chance to play with the DCX and setup a little bit here are a couple of initial graphs of my in room response. Needs a little work but my setup and placement options are somewhat limited for a little while. Subwoofers Only. Main speakers muted. Subwoofers and Main...

Build Plans, 18" Dayton Slot Port

Tips I leaned along the way: 1. Because there are SO many parts in this design it is crucial they are all cut to their respective dimensions precisely. If you are off by a 1/16 on a few parts it will add up and the end product will not fit together as perfect as it could. 2. If you use the...

Build Plans, 18" Dayton Slot Port

This design will require the following materials to build one pair. This is how I built them. You can change the parts to suit your personal taste but keep in mind the sketchup file is designed with 1" MDF so a redesign would be needed to utilize any other material that is not 1" thick. QTY 5-...

Build Plans, 18" Dayton Slot Port

Okay, So I know I have the build thread but for those who just want to know the specifics I wanted to create a separate thread now that I have actually built this design and it is finalized. Here you will find relevant information needed to build these subwoofers. Since it seems many folks also...

    Carbon Monoxide and Fuel Furnaces

Part of the issue is also the people who die from their own laziness and stupidity. I am talking about the people who let snow cover their exhaust vents. I see plenty of people who are too lazy to shovel a proper path to the exits in their homes. Forget about keeping vents clear. They are the...

Should i buy an extra subwoofer?

Your speakers have an LFE (Low Frequency Effects) input to be used for people who want a home theater setup and want to have their receiver do the work when it comes to crossover frequency, levels.. etc. I would use this down the road once you understand more about setting up a system. For now...

Should i buy an extra subwoofer?

You do not need to constrain yourself to a DefTech subwoofer to be in the same phase. That is nonsense. Nearly all subwoofers have phase adjustments. If the subwoofer itself does not your receiver likely does. No matter what subwoofer you get you will want to fiddle with the phase adjustment...

Dayton 18" HO Ported Build Thread

The ring terminals were made for heavier gauge wire than two 12awg put together so just crimping them with a crimp tool even if you had one big enough would not properly crimp them. I inserted the wire, crimped them down with a crimp tool just to hold the wire in place then literally put the lug...
