Fixing the Bass in Your Room - Adding a Powered Subwoofer

It makes no sense to have those speakers against the wall. Pull them out a few feet and the sound will improve dramatically even if you do nothing else.

Focal Clear is No More! Long Live Clear Mg!

Thanks for this review. I'm a happy Clear owner, and the various reviews of the MG and MG Pro have convinced me to stay with what I have rather than pay a lot for only an incremental improvement (which some reviewers find to be a mixed bag). Just to clarify one point: The Pro and Pro MG aren't...

    Hearing Protection and Listening Safety

I've been using Bose over-the ear (QC25) headphones for several years when I go to a movie that I know will be too loud ("Baby Driver" without the headphones was the last straw). Speech is audible, but other frequencies are attenuated.

Audyssey MultEQ Room Correction Interview With Chris Kyriakakis

Some upper-level Denon models can save your Audyssey configurations and other settings to a file on your PC, and you can then reload them later on. This would indeed be handy if you were periodically moving in different speakers to review, then replacing them with your own speakers. Possibly...

    Is M&K Gone?

Can't help you with Dallas repairs, but I have been following an M&K thread on another forum, and nobody's reporting any contact so far with the new owners of the M&K intellectual property rights, except for their press releases.

Adding a Power AMP to a Denon AVR 3805

Why don't you set the Denon to use the subwoofer in 2-channel audio; then you should have plenty of power without having to buy a separate amp, since the SVS's amplifier will be doing the heavy lifting in the bass, where most of the power would be needed.

Plan on only using headphones in living room, need a good receiver?

I was going to suggest that you could do quite well with a separate headphone amplifier if you **never** plan to use speakers, but you'd have to switch the inputs from one source to another. Many receivers, especially but not only less expensive ones, have terrible headphone amplifiers built in...

    Audioholics and objectivity

I would direct you to John Atkinson's measurements of the $28,000 Zanden CD equipment in Stereophile (versus Michael Fremer's ecstatic subjective appraisal published in the same article). The manufacturer supplied a defective piece of equipment--(for $28K!)--and a correctly built replacement...

    Audioholics and objectivity

I am disturbed by the plan to turn Audioholics into a store. Although I thoroughly read the description of how Audioholics plans to retain its objectivity, I would be extremely surprised if Audioholics ever posted a negative review of a product that was being sold by Audioholics. Of course, none...

    Blu-ray's Dirty Little Secret

they are screwing themselves ...so as a result of this format war and all of the lying that's going on, my prediction is that neither of these new formats will win out because consumers will avoid them both in order to not get stuck with "orphaned" equipment and software. This is part of what...

    Carmina Burana

I generally agree re the Atlanta sound. However, I happened to listen to their first Atlanta recording (Firebird Suite, Polovetsian Dances, etc.) from 1978 earlier today, as it happened, and the imaging is much more precise and detailed than any of their more recent recordings in the same venue...

    AV123 x-mtm Tower Speaker Review

sounded to me like the speakers got a thumbs-down I was puzzled by this review. I am not familiar with these speakers and I have no opinion about them. But I read the review and the reviewer said they were muddy, had an extreme bass emphasis, unclear highs, no soundstage. Sounds like the...

    Biwired Speakers to Receiver

Why would it present a tough load? Wouldn't this actually reduce the load, because you have effectively doubled the gauge of the wire connected to each of the output terminals, thus decreasing resistance?

Denon Adds Network Features to AV Products

Yes, but the workaround (if your room setup allows it) is to use a different video connection to the monitor for doing adjustments when you need to see the GUI. You can use component, S-video, or composite--it doesn't really matter.

    Denon AVR-4308CI First Look

I don't understand; Audyssey and an SPL do different things, with only one thing in common--setting the volume levels for each channel. How can you do the same thing as the Audyssey (but better) with an SPL?

Emotiva Audio RPA-1 Stereo Amplifier Review

Snr Isn't the signal-to-noise ratio a little disappointing, given the 100 dB that you can get from digital sources and many preamps?

Should I just get a better CD player?

[SIZE="2"] I don't have golden ears, but I will affirm again that there **are** audible differences between CD players. What measured variable will correspond with the audble differences, I don't know. Once difference that's easily noticed in some machines is a kind of "grainy" sound to...

    Carmina Burana

I'd put in a vote for the low-priced CD reissue of Ozawa/Boston, which has awesome singing by the chorus, Sherrill Milnes, and Evelyn Mandac. The performance is exciting and the sound quality is excellent. (The tenor solo is strangulated, but the poor guy has only one number and it's over...)

Should I just get a better CD player?

not all CD players sound the same I have several different machines on which I've compared CD quality. I use a headphone amp and a pair of Sennheiser HD650 headphones that I can move rapidly from one machine to the next, and the differences between all 3 of my machines are obvious on CD's. I...
