LED Lamps to Replace Incandescent Bulbs - But When?

The math on the payback of the bulbs is pretty easy to do, as I did it this weekend after noticing 60w LED bulbs available for right around $10 each. Given that the main room in my house has a light fixture with four 60w bulbs, and it's probably on 8 hours a day (probably more), and that energy...

Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray Player Review

Both original models of the PS3 supported SACD, but after that only the models that also supported PS2 software through software emulation also supported SACD. Those were the 60 GB version that initially came out in Europe, and the first 80 GB version that came out in the USA.

Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray Player Review

I also tested multi-channel DSD to my Marantz AV8003 this afternoon and it worked perfectly. I did run into that soft-popping sound when playing a CD (over HDMI), but not when playing an SACD (Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks). Hopefully this is fixed soon as well.

Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray Player Review

A couple of questions, from someone that also has a BDP-83 sitting in their AV rack right now: - What version of Firmware were you using for the testing? As I've had two firmware updates pushed out in the past week, I'm wondering if the HQV numbers might be improved by the time the firmware...

Kimber Kable 4PR & 8PR Speaker Cable Review

WBT posts To me, the focus on the WBT binding posts doesn't seem to be a big deal to recommend the cables. WBT posts are available easily from a lot of retailers, and you can easily terminate your own cables and install them yourself. Since, aside from the quality of the WBT connectors, the...

Enter to Win: $1000 off Axiom Order!

I've calibrated my system by hand, and offer to do it for friends but they almost never take me up on it. I'll probably be paying an ISF Tech to calibrate my DLP soon as well, since I hate to think I'm not getting the best from it.

    Denon DVD-3930CI Review

One reason, as discussed, was that it's also a top-flight music player as well. However, if I'm someone that owns a few hundred DVD's (and I have quite a few friends that do), I'm not going to replace those all instantly, so if I can get a top notch DVD player that will improve the quality of...

Audyssey MultEQ Test Report for Denon AVR-3806

OK, thanks. So if I have no THX processing, I should use Audyssey mode, and if I do have THX processing, I'll go with Flat mode.

Audyssey MultEQ Test Report for Denon AVR-3806

Since I didn't notice it in the review (though I might have missed it), what is Audyssey's reason for the roll-off at the higher end of the frequency spectrum, and why would the recommendation for that be different for movies than music (as you mention using the Flat mode for music instead of...

Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi - Here it Comes!

I want to know this as well. I'm picking up a 1080p Samsung DLP soon and want to know if I can use this with the Oppo 970 to upconvert to 1080p and not have macroblocking issues (what I mostly worry about). Another question - Can you set certain inputs to scale, and certain inputs to pass...

Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi - Here it Comes!

The HDMI 1.3 spec is final, but no chips that support it are available yet. A few people are predicting that the first chips to output HDMI 1.3 will be in the Sony PS3, but nothing will be able to decode from it yet. I wouldn't count on anything with HDMI 1.3 showing up until CES next year, at...

Silicon Optix Releases Reon-VX Chip for Lower Priced Performance

I think these are meant more for lower-end devices than as a dedicated scaler. Much like certain recievers (the Pioneer Elite's anounced today, certain Yamaha and Denon models) have Faroudja chipsets for scaling 480i to 480p->1080p over HDMI, and those same Faroudja chipsets are found in DVD...

Silicon Optix Releases Reon-VX Chip for Lower Priced Performance

Well, it's not One Trillion Hz, most likely. Since the chip is a very specialized design, it could probably perform something like 50-100 basic operations per clock cycle, and then it would only need to run at something like 10 Ghz to pull off 1 trillion operations per second. I have no idea...

REVIEW: Denon AVR-4306 Receiver with HDMI

Using DenonLink III, you can have a single cable solution for transporting SACD/DVD-A/DD/DTS signals to the reciever from a compatible Denon DVD player (A 3910 or 5910 in this case). Of course, there are rumors of a new Denon DVD player series being anounced soon, possibly with DenonLink in the...

Enter to Win: $500 of cables from Impact Acoustics

Santa didn't bring me anything electronic this year unfortunately. What I really wanted was a Pioneer-79Avi universal player, so I can retire my SACD player, or a new receiver with HDMI switching (Denon or Pioneer work). I'll buy myself an SXRD set next year to go with these and retire the...

New Denon Product Announcements & Conference

Can someone tell me the difference in the MPEG decoders in the two $350 players? The 1920 looks decent for me as my display doesn't have the Macroblocking issue I don't think.

Impact Acoustics Giveaway - FREE HDMI Cables!!!

I would like to see screw on, locking banana plug speaker cables. I'm looking for a set and since I can't solder, it's the best solution for me to build my own speaker cables without getting ripped off out there.
