Definitive Technology Speakers - ARE THEY THAT GOOD?

That would imply that the bipolar design somehow reduces detail, which I doubt is the case. There are other possibilities. One is simply that the CAs have better components, though I doubt this also. More likely is that the much smaller cabinets are easier to build with minimal resonance and/or...

Definitive Technology Speakers - ARE THEY THAT GOOD?

As much as I love my CAs, the BP8Bs are back in my stereo system, possibly to stay this time. The bass is neither too much (like the BP10Bs) nor missing the very lowest frequencies (like the CAs), but just right. Placed well away from all walls, the imaging is tight and I really like the overall...

Definitive Technology Speakers - ARE THEY THAT GOOD?

Tone controls are a brute force measure, without the flexibility of an equalizer. Who is Jerry? FYI, I do still enjoy listening to my BP8s in the stereo sometimes (less bass than the BP10s makes them better in that room.) They need to be far away from walls, though.

    New bookshelf speakers

They are not sold singly, but two pairs of Cambridge Audio S30s would run you $440 on sale. These sound incredible, and are small. (I owned Boston A60s, with 8" woofers, for many years and consider these a huge step up in every area, including bass.) For $600/pr (without the center), you could...

I got her reply. My offer has been appreciatively accepted.

Hobson's choice (aka the Devil's bargain)

I did specify that it was the cynical/paranoid part of me having these thoughts.:p It is mostly the timing (Our first time together all day after having her tell me she is ready for anything, on the last weekend before she goes out of town for a month, and this is when she gets sick? Can you...

Hobson's choice (aka the Devil's bargain)

Yeah, yeah. I am aware of the sort of comment that left me open for, but not sure of a better way to say what I meant. (At this point, the cynical/paranoid part of me has not ruled out the possibility that she is just sadistically playing me. That is one of the reasons I can't wait a month: I...

Good tunes ruined by better gear.

Yes. No matter how good a CD is in terms of content, it doesn't stay in my collection if the sound quality is not up to snuff. This may be part of the reason I tend to focus on jazz and new age, which are usually very well recorded. (There are exceptions. My new Charlie Hunter CD has too much...

Hobson's choice (aka the Devil's bargain)

OK. I just sent her an email to the effect of "If I get sick, so be it, you are worth it.", and am now waitng for her response (may be a long wait, she doesn't check email all that often.) My biggest concern now is that she will simply feel too awful to go through with it.:(

Hobson's choice (aka the Devil's bargain)

I mentioned a little about it near the end of the "stood up" thread, before it went off on nasty tangents and got closed.

Fed cuts interest, oil down a bit.

We can all spend our "economic stimulus" checks buying gas. The cheapest where I live is currently $3.40/gal.

Hobson's choice (aka the Devil's bargain)

My new girlfriend wants to be with me (in every sense of that phrase) on Saturday. Yesterday (Wednesday) she started taking antibiotics for a throat infection, so it is likely that she will be catching. She is about to go on a mandatory trip, so if it is not Saturday, I will not see her for a...

Good deal or not on B & O speakers?

I am not sure I would buy any speakers from 1970. Speaker design and manufacture has come a long way since then. For $250 you could get a pair of Cambridge Audio S30s (or other modern bang-for-buck speakers), and my bet is that they would trounce those B&Os.

What remastered CDs have blown you away ?

Well, my remasters of Pyramid and Turn of a Freindly Card arrived last night, and "blown away" is definitely the phrase I would use. I am probably more familiar with Pyramid than any other recording in existence, so I really appreciated the fact that I was able to hear subtleties that I have...

    Tried a new Beer

Ferocious headache for two days, but I am over it now and my digestion is already showing signs of improvement. My nervous habits (eg swinging a foot) are also noticeably reduced, plus my thinking seems clearer.

    Speakers don't matter

I find the exact opposite to be true. The vast majority of today's speakers are quite good, with poor ones being a rare exception. It is fair to say, however, that very few are anything special.

What remastered CDs have blown you away ?

Oh, I agree, and thank's for the reminder. I wish the same people would remaster the rest of the Beatles calalog, because that one sounds dramatically better than any of the others. (Not counting Love, of course.)
