@PENG, not knocking Class D amps, many use them in their setups, very happy with the results. Funny you mentioned how easy Class D Amps are for placement, plus weight a lot less. I dropped a class A/B, 5 channel Amp on my right hand few years back, stayed swollen for almost a month.

All those are European or American brands - currently Aussie dollar is low. Plus postage will be high. I found this Aussie brand (Elektra) if someone could have a look - on paper it looks extremely impressive three channel amp. Damping factor > 5000 freq response starts from 5 Hz (Blah blah?)...

No idea why they did it. Class H amps have had avery checkered history. Not that class D have been smooth going in years past. However, class D amps seem to be at a point where they are reliable.

It's not cheap to be sure, but I can't think of anything similar for less $ either. One could buy say a Buckeye class D amp and a MiniDSP HSD for comparable capabilities with room correction, DSP, etc and plenty of power on tap. That would cost less. I admit I still like my A/B amps, but will...

With those choices flip a coin, whichever sided it lands on still good to go. Chasing that dragging down a rabbit hole, Is broad with this hobby. Class D amp/amps for surround duty would be a great option.

There's something to be said just for an external/rack amp too. Spec'g cheap class d amps to keep prices down an issue too, killed a sub company called Epik and one other IIRC (Elemental?)

Did you read the article linked in the first post of this thread? The Sony avr just says power consumption, not max, and can exceed 240W.

I've been using Crown amps to power my subs for over a decade. I have both class A/B and class D and both have been flawless since day one. My class D amp was used when I bought it 13 years ago.

Good point of interest in your comments, I've been following PENG a lot on those new Class D amps he loves so much. The specs on them are some of the best I've seem. Also over on ASR site many are big fans of those types of amps. High output to dollar value, I'm just not completely sold yet on...

My SuperCube 8000 has a class HD (not sure what that is exactly but it has an "H" so..) and it's been used nearly every day since I bought it in 2013 and have not had a single issue other than the auto on is not very sensitive.

I will only use $5,000 Class A/B Amps that weigh 100-Pounds for all my subwoofers. :cool:

The pro audio QSC DCA series of power amps are designed to handle 2 ohm loads, so do the Crown DriveCore series amps. The Crown Class D DriveCore series won't generate much heat. So won't the QSC DCA series which have class AB output circuitry but use a SMPS power supply with cooling fans...

Def Tech's smaller 8" & 10" models the DN8 & DN10 employ Class D & for whatever reason they went for the less efficient Class H for their larger DN12 & DN15 models, the logic for the switch to Class H was mentioned in this overview/review of the Descend subwoofer series here...
