    Which amp would you buy?

+1 for the ATi Amp, Although all the amps you listed are good choices. You may get Some suggestions for Class D amps. I myself don't care much for Class D amps. Some like Class D amps a lot, To each their own though.

    Adding an external power amplifier

Those DCA Series amps don't have a Class D output configuration. The DCA 1222 and the 1622 operate as Class AB, whereas the more powerful amps have a 2-tier Class H output circuitry. Some if not all of these amps were released in 1998 and their circuitry was never modified just as proof of good...

Very true, I'm not a amp guru, but Crown Class D amps have a proven track of quality, reliability and longevity you can't kill them. I've always wondered why Class D in Subs have reliability issue, premature failure or at the very least be able to get the amp serviced.

    Which amp would you buy?

...because that make them easy to place and disappear and let me focus on the music I am listening to. So yes I missed my Bryston SST and Parasound Halo amp sometimes, and will keep my remaining class AB amps probably forever..., but most of the time I listen to music with those mini class D...

Crown has always been one of the best for reliable class D. I like what you and Lovin were saying about passive subs and rack amps that's really the ideal way to go in my humble opinion. I just don't have enough room in my rack :(

"class AB amp driven subs that lasted forever back in the day." You made a good point on Class D Amps, premature failure. I remember Polk Audio Pro Subs the whole line suffered premature amp failure. Polk couldn't even replace those amps didn't have any. Going the route of a passive sub with a...

One point some people make is that class-D amps cannot handle 2-ohms and 1-ohm. It doesn’t matter to most of us because our speakers are usually 4-8 ohms. But what do you think?

    Which amp would you buy?

@PENG, not knocking Class D amps, many use them in their setups, very happy with the results. Funny you mentioned how easy Class D Amps are for placement, plus weight a lot less. I dropped a class A/B, 5 channel Amp on my right hand few years back, stayed swollen for almost a month.

No idea why they did it. Class H amps have had avery checkered history. Not that class D have been smooth going in years past. However, class D amps seem to be at a point where they are reliable.

    Adding an external power amplifier

I found this Article on Class D amps https://search.brave.com/search?q=whats+knock+on+class+d+amps&source=desktop Interesting article. Article did state this at the end of it though. "It’s worth noting that these “knocks” are not unique to Class D amplifiers and can be mitigated with proper...

There's something to be said just for an external/rack amp too. Spec'g cheap class d amps to keep prices down an issue too, killed a sub company called Epik and one other IIRC (Elemental?)

My SuperCube 8000 has a class HD (not sure what that is exactly but it has an "H" so..) and it's been used nearly every day since I bought it in 2013 and have not had a single issue other than the auto on is not very sensitive.

Def Tech's smaller 8" & 10" models the DN8 & DN10 employ Class D & for whatever reason they went for the less efficient Class H for their larger DN12 & DN15 models, the logic for the switch to Class H was mentioned in this overview/review of the Descend subwoofer series here...

I believe Rythmik also use Class H amps in some of their models that have 600W RMS but the top end HX series are (Hypex module) based with either 800W/900W RMS but I suppose that isn't a very good comparison as Rythmik utilise their highly regarded direct servo-based amp technology compared to...

    Adding an external power amplifier

I got my Crowns used from a pro-audio marketplace... they were abused for a couple of years, then I bought them... 2x XLS2500 for US$250 each - they have been running flawlessly in my system for about 15 years now. Good quality pro-audio gear can be a recipe for long term peace of mind!

An amp in a box in a sub could be a heat issue, plus potentially the vibrations I suppose, other than simply price point. I use Crown XLS amps for my diy subs. Otoh the warranty replacement amp I got for my Epik from Epik before they shut down is still doing fine some 10 years down the road.

I think the issue (1-2 ohm class-D) was that many people were not aware/seen those ohm measurements. And now that they can see those 2-ohm measurements, they can still say, “Okay, so class-D can handle 2-ohms, but where’s the actual 1-ohm measurements?” :D Does 1-ohm matter? Does 100dB SINAD...
