I Purchased Three Copies!!

"Gonna buy five copies for my mother!" Just kidding. One of the very most iconic albums in pop music is The Beach Boys Pet Sounds (alert the media!). There is a new one step (tape to lacquer) release coming on May 15th, which will be the 60th anniversary I think, limited with no second pressings to 6,000 numbered copies. It will be on a single 33 and 1/3 LP. Very expensive at $100 a pop. So why did I buy three? One for myself and two to keep sealed and sell in a few years. Could very well be a great investment. Santana's Abraxas 2016 Mofi one step retailed for $99 limited to 5,000 numbered copies. Discogs has several of those from $750 for a VG+ and up to $2350 for a sealed. Pet sounds is far, far, far more iconic. Not even close. So we'll see. A very decent gamble as an investment! There are several youtubes about it if you search "Pet Sounds One Step" as a handful of these youtubers have had test pressings sent to them. There are a bunch of 60th anniversary re-issues coming out, a zeotrope, a green splatter, a 2 LP stereo and mono, Sessions LP's and CD's. None of those are from the One Step source tape. Most if not all are probably digital. https://shop.thebeachboys.com/products/pet-sounds-definitive-sound-series-audiophile-edition-lp
Here is what is probably the most informative video about it: https://www.youtube.com/live/deOvO8dujQE?si=LiqYzs5blh6FdLfW

Meh, mostly a super session with studio pros rather than the Beach Boys.....good album, but not as great as many make it out to be except for that manufactured part with studio pros (i.e. the Wrecking Crew)

You are correct it wasn't the band except for Brian. Carl, Mike Al and Dennis only contributed vox after the tracks were complete. But it is a great album. Not only for what Brian Wilson created, but how it impacted pop history. That is undeniable. There is no record ever with that kind of cultural and historical impact. It is common knowledge that it inspired the Fabs to make Sgt. Pepper. And what did that spawn? That practically started the psychedelic era. There was a friendly rivalry betwixt the Fabs and The BB. Brian was inspired to create Pet Sounds after hearing Rubber Soul, the American version, which is really a different record than the official Rubber Soul. Listen to the harmonica in "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite". Obviously inspired by Pet Sounds.
BTW, I did sound once for one Pet Sounds session player around 1988. Wrecking Crew guitarist Mike Deasy. He does the freaky lead guitar on Stevie Wonder's "Superstition". Soooo that makes me, what.... two degrees of separation from Brain Wilson?
So anyway I have to disagree with you, it is a freaking work of art. It happens to usually be number two in the top 500 albums in history lists. Behind Sgt. Pepper!
I am pretty dang excited to get it. I will keep the lowest serial number for my collection of course. And then the DCC CD that I mentioned in another post should arrive early this week.

When I originally ordered, I ordered one. Then a couple days later I thought I could buy two more as an investment. I got the first order yesterday. Not a low number. 4962 of 6000. Oh well. Amazing, off the charts package. The cover is matte in a gorgeous, hard box slip case, also matte. Gatefold cover has the original front and back, inside, there is the 1972 Brother Records cover that originally used the source tape. It sounds as good as what the podcasters were saying. And now the reviews are coming in on Discogs and what-not. The consensus is that this is easily the best mono issue of this record ever. Capitol sent me an email about a slight delay in shipping my second order of two copies. And if I wanted to, I can cancel and get a refund. I thought "good". That'll give me an opportunity to hear it first. I am keeping my order. I will keep those two sealed and make some money on them in the future. If the numbers are lower than mine, I might keep the lowest, even though one has been opened and played. I can decide that in a few years, when people are jonesing for this album. It's still available to order, but it is expected to be sold out before late May. https://shop.capitolmusic.com/products/pet-sounds-definitive-sound-series-audiophile-edition-lp

My plan is already working out. It was only sold out less than a week ago and the current price has already doubled on Discogs and ebay.

My shipment of two copies arrives today via Fedex. On a Sunday is kinda weird, but that's good. I hope I have lower numbers, but I doubt it as they likely shipped the lower numbers first.

The serial numbers I have are one each in the 3000's, 4,000's and 5,000's. I was hoping for one super low, but no biggie.
