You guys are going to get me divorced...
I just ordered the HSU VTF2 mk4 sub... :(
So now here is the system as it stands...

Emotiva ucm1 preamp processor
Emotiva xpa-5 200x5 amplifier
HSU MK4 subwoofer
Ascend speakers 3-340's and 2-200's {with tower stands for 2 340s}
and an Emotiva UPA-200 that runs my multi room system...

I told my wife I wasnt going to go over $2000 total I think Im around $4000 now with all the wires mounts and racks...

But Ive been looking on the web and for $3000 for the complete 5.1 setup I dont think I did too bad, considering there are preamps that cost double that.. Thanks Ill update with some pics and a review when its all here..

I'm not sure spending $1400 of your budget on a separate processor and amp is really the best way for you to go, honestly.

Ah OK. I assume by "MK4" you mean the VTF-3 MK4? FYI, the sub model is VTF-3 and "Mk4" denotes essentially the 4th version of it.

Actually the VTF-2, the 3 was over $200 more than the 2, so thats where I ended up... Hopefully its enough...

Oh OK. You can see where using just the Mk designation causes confusion then ;)

The VTF-2 is good.

Has this been sold yet?

If it hasn't been sold, can I buy separate items on the list?

Great post, but need an update

I thought I had it made as this excellent post seemed like it was written just for me. However, the Denon AVR 1712 is now almost gone and price is $269--and Emotiva tells me the XRS 4.1 has been discontinued and no longer available. Would you please update your suggestions based on this?

Many thanks!

The surrounds are really not that important to go with such expensive models, an inexpensive bookshelf gets the job done just fine...

as for the avr, Im not sure what you are asking, what would your budget be, that avr is nice for that price...

heres a few surround options..

I honestly dont think you will notice the difference between the $35 sale bookshelfs at PE, or a $500 pair of surrounds... Surrounds are effect speakers, and I use a $300 pair of bookshelfs but have tried the PE bookshelfs and they do the same thing....

Is it still for sale? If so, are you willing to sell the surrounds alone? I really like the Emotiva surrounds, and am looking for another pair. Please let me know ASAP

Request for clarification--FirstReflection et al

I have found your advice in this post very helpful! While I have enjoyed stereo for 50 years, I am not up to date on all the choices. My interests are listening to music (classical, show tunes, etc.) and surround sound for watching movies--Panasonic Bluray DMP-BD60. I ordered the Denon AVR-1712 yesterday, as recommended.

I'm writing to get your advice/clarification on speakers. My "living" room is 15'X15'X8'--but it is about 1/2 of a "great room" with open dining and kitchen--for a total area of 30'X15'X8 (volume of 3600 cu ft). Will the HSU STF-2 subwoofer still be adequate (you mentioned 2700 cu ft was ok)?? TV is wall mounted above the fireplace and the viewing/listening area is 11' from the fireplace. I plan to buy the Ascend Acoustics 200 SEs for front and center. No Emotiva XRS4.1 available as discontinued. You suggested 2 more Ascend 200 SEs for surround--would the Fluance AVBP2 Bipolar (Amazon $125 delivered) be an equally good choice--considering my interests? Or do you stand with your preference for two more Ascends?

Thanks for your help.

FR should be here soon, my room is very close to yours, rite down to mounting the tv over the fireplace. the fluance are good surrounds, for their price...

I have a set of 170's and a 340 center for sale, they will blow the 200's away in your larger room for sure... And they match perfectly with the 340 center... You will have the same warm sound, except you will have a much larger and robust amount of it...

ImcLoud--I can't reply to your PM since don't have 5 posts

Apparently the forum software is set up so I can't answer your PM as I only have 2 posts--and need 5 to do so.

Yup, things have changed since the summer. Prices have gone up. Some products have been discontinued. Things change in a hurry! But I'm glad this thread has still been helpful to a few folks :)

The Atlantic Technology 2200SR bi/di-pole surrounds that ImcLoud linked to on Amazon, what a terrific find! Those will serve as an excellent alternative to the sadly discontinued Emotiva bi-pole surround speakers.

The Atlantics are a nice, neutral speaker that should match very nicely with the Ascend front speakers. Phenominal price on those older 2200 series models. I'm sure there aren't many in stock, and they'll be gone before too long, also

While I've not heard the Fluance bi-pole surrounds first hand, I'm leary of their low end extension, just based on their own specs as stated on the Fluance website. a -3dB point of 130Hz is very high. Too high to get a good blend with the subwoofer without either making the subwoofer sound localizable, or leaving a "hole" in the frequency response - a "gap" where the subwoofer and the surround speakers cross over. It's not as critical as in the front speakers, but it's still something to be avoided.

This thread got very long, so I'm sure newer readers might have skipped a lot of the posts in the middle.

I just want to stress that I recommended the HTM-200SE - 3 of them across the front - because of their versatility and flexibility in terms of placement. But that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be the very best choice for everyone.

If you have a larger room and sit more than 12 feet away, the compact HTM-200SE aren't meant for that. They are smaller speakers, meant for a smaller room and a shorter listening distance.

So, HamptonHall, in your particular case, you might want to consider one of the larger Ascend speaker models. It all depends. Both the CBM-170SE and CMT-340SE are meant to be placed on stands, with air all around them. If you want to wall mount your speakers or put them in some sort of shelf or entertainment unit, the HTM-200SE will still be a better choice. It's all about matching the choice of speakers to where they will be placed and to the size of your room and seating distance.

With well over 3000 cubic feet of air volume to contend with, the HSU STF-2 subwoofer will not have adequate output for hitting full Reference Volume. But depending on your taste for loudness and tactile bass, it might play loud enough. It's tough to say, because it's partially a matter of taste. Reference Volume is VERY loud. Think an IMAX theater or THX Certified theater. Very few people listen at that volume level at home. Most people are AT LEAST 10dB quieter. Most folks are actually more like 20 or 30 dB quieter at home.

If you're more in that 20 or 30dB below Reference Level group, then the STF-2 might be just fine. But for that room size, I would personally advise a subwoofer capable of higher output. The $550 HSU VTF-2 MK4 would be a better choice. It still might not hit full Reference Volume, actually. But considering price, size and output, it's likely your best choice. It won't struggle like the STF-2 might. And getting even more output would mean a significant increase in price. All things considered, I'd say the VTF-2 MK4 is very likely going to be your best candidate for a subwoofer.

I hope that's of some help! :)

Bookshelf placement (built-ins on both sides of fireplace) required for left and right, with center on mantle. The sides can be placed at same height as the center speaker, but they will sit about 22" back from the front of the center speaker. Distance from center speaker to listening area is max 10 feet. (room depth is 15 feet) I will have to mount the Atlantics on the rear wall. Are there any issues I'm missing? It sounds like the HTM-200SEs are the best choice given this placement.

I'd opt for the VTF-2 MK4 as you suggested, but I am curious to know if another $200 for the Rythmik FV12 would provide good price performance? I understand the subwoofer is a critical piece in the system. Would this be a cost effective choice (bang for the bucks) or would I see little significant difference in the two subwoofers, given the Denon AVR-1712, HTM-200SEs and Atlantics?

Again, my interests are music (say 60-70%) and movies.

If you're considering spending that much, I would persue this, just my opinion as a proud owner of one soon to be duals.;) You may be waiting for the FV12 forever as it is out of stock.:(

Yes, given your compromised placement of the speakers (in a bookcase and on the mantle), and your 10-12 foot distance, I'd say sticking with the 3 HTM-200SE speakers across the front makes the most sense. The HTM-200SE are better able to cope with less than ideal placement better than just about any other speakers I know of. Which, of course, is the whole reason why I recommended them in this thread - they'll do well and sound good for the greatest number of people :)

The HSU VTF-2 MK4 and Rythmik FV12 are the same $550 price. The Rythmik FV12 is out of stock though. The VTF-2 MK4 and FV12 are very comparable.

So I think when you mentioned spending $200 more, you were referring to spending $200 more than the $350 STF-2? You were not talking about spending $200 more than the $550 VTF-2 MK4, making your subwoofer budget $750, correct?

As I say, if you want to be able to hit full Reference Volume, an even higher output subwoofer than the VTF-2 MK4 (or Rythmik FV12) might be necessary. If your budget has jumped to $750, then yes, you could potentially benefit from an even higher output subwoofer, which would be available at that $750 price point.

But if you were talking about $200 more than the $350 STF-2 - as I suspect you were - then you cannot do better than the $550 VTF-2 MK4. It's very similar to the Rythmik FV12, which is also $550. Both the VTF-2 MK4 and FV12 can play lower and louder than the $350 STF-2. Both can also be adjusted and "tuned" so that you can get flatter frequency response in your room. The VTF-2 MK4 actually has more adjustment capability than the FV12. And, of course, the VTF-2 MK4 is actually available. The FV12 is on back order ;)

So your final shopping list would look like:

2x Ascend Acoustics HTM-200SE Front Left/Right speakers
1x Ascend Acoustics HTM-200SE C Center speaker

- Those 3 speakers purchased all together will come to $468 including shipping.

2x Atlantic Technology 2200SR Surround speakers

- The Amazon price has these at $150 for the pair.

1x HSU VTF-2 MK4 Subwoofer

- Good timing as HSU has the VTF-2 MK4 on sale! $582 after shipping.

So $1200 on the nose, total! That's a tremendous deal for this level of quality!

:D

i just ordered 340's across the front and a pair of 170's for sides. I have 13x16 living room that is open and overlooks the dining area which is about 10x18 and the ceiling is vaulted throughout, would spending 600 dollars on one sub be better than say getting two klipsch rw12d subs when they are on sale for 300 bucks apiece?
