Any reasons against HSU VTF15

My trigger finger is getting itchy. Not sure if I can hold out for the Shootout review of this. Might be another month or so would seem. Really like the VTF-15 at least on the surface. Can put the plugs in for Sealed use with music and take them out for Theater. Meets $$ and wife visual factors as well. I probably will need two for my room L shaped 4000cf. But will do one now and one later. I'm a little worried about the RMS being 350 while everyone else is 600+. I know peak is high, but would it get "tired" say trying to do the sustained rumble in the start of the Pod Race scene in Star Wars Ep 1?

Does anyone have an SPL graph for it? I couldn't find anything on their website. Any reasons people can think of not to get this? Other options SVS one shoot out reviewed, Epik Empire, F15 HP.

Thanks and Happy Friday!

They said they would be releasing the reviews at a rate of one every 2 weeks or so. Gene also said in the main shootout thread that the Rythmik sub is the next review due out, so be prepared to wait a little longer.

I'm eager to see the VTF-15 review as well... :)

For $1k, you are going to be hard pressed to find a better subwoofer. The VTF-15H is straight where I would go for $1k if I was on the sub market with that budget. If I didn't need all the output I would probably go with Rythmik instead. The SVS and Epik would be great subs too, you can't go wrong with any of them.

Driving down to pick up two VTF-15's tomorrow. :D
Will be a few weeks before they are setup because I am building 5.2 system from scratch. Will post when all is setup.

Having owned both, I just don't like port noise. Currently using ported. Prefer sealed.

Music/concert dvd/blu-ray is most important to me though.
It would sure be nice if somebody made the perfect balance between sealed tight and ported 20hz impact - or at least at a decent price. I've blown (on emo Ultra-12 and XPA-2) the money I was saving for new family room sub(s) but a pair of VTF-15s were high on my list of candidates.

The port noise from front-ported subs tend to be much more audible than porting on the bottom or rear, in my experience. If you want ported sub efficiency with less port noise, try the subs from Outlaw Audio or Hsu's other VTF subs, they sound terrific. Personally I don't notice any noise from ports unless I am facing the ported side of the sub and am relatively close to the sub. Even then, it is difficult to perceive, usually if the sub is so loud that the port is making noise then the other speakers are rocking so hard it masks the port noise anyway.

But, it's there. The booming may cover it up, but it's there.

In a properly constructed ported sub working within its normal operating range it should be as transparent as a sealed sub. The two DIY infinity kappa's I had had no port noise whatsoever, even during movies like War of the Worlds.

For a one sub solution I tend to favor a ported sub unless the room is small and enclosed.

This subject has also being beaten to death. For the majority, ported design enclosure are a more cost effective solution to achieve maxium SPL in room. With the use of higher quality drivers(like a Kappa or AE av12x) they can also assit to reduce some air noise. To date...I haven't heard any port/or air noise from my sub and I listen at close to reference levels...fwiw.

My 2 cents, Bill

I listened to both the VTF-15 and the ULS-15 in the same room at Hsu's headquarters.

1) I don't think you need to worry about the amplifier power. With a single VTF-15 running its SPL output was amazing. My pant legs were actually vibrating. (I don't remember which movie Dr Hsu was playing).

2) I don't think there could be a better value for overall Home Theater performance where max SPL is a primary consideration.

3) Despite my praise for the VTF-15, I left Hsu headquarters with Dual ULS-15s. They have a tighter, more linear sound (even vs the VTFs in plugged mode). They have more than enough output for my home theater. But, they won't put out as high an SPL level in the mid/upper bass as the VT-15.

4) So, you will hear virtually nothing but praise for the VTF-15s (here and at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1141416). But, you will also find posts from Pete at Hsu (and others) that discrimate the differences between these two Hsu subs. I've never heard the Rhythmik FV-15HP that's about to have its review posted here. But, that might be another option.

There ain't a single answer for "the best". But, like others have posted, I can't imagine you'd be disappointed with the VTF-15 - its owners are overwhelmingly positive in the various online forums.
