I thought DENON was reliable?

Okay, so I bought the Denon AVR-5308CI brand new from J&R Music World about 1.5 yrs ago - still under the 2 yr warranty period.

All of the sudden this weekend, HDMI Inputs 1-3 did not work at all!

But HDMI Inputs 4-6 still works.

It makes me wonder why anyone should buy a BRAND new so-called "reliable" brand from JAPAN and still require repair after only 1.5 yrs?

I could have bought a refurbished for 1/2 the price, and it could very well be just as reliable or unreliable.

Now I'm going to have to send it to the MAIN Repair Center in New Jersey, which will cost me about $65.

The amplifier of my previous B&W sub stopped working after less than a year. All electronics can fail. With all due respect but looking at the gear you have; complaining about $65 is not really serious.

Don't bye into his whining, he is just looking for an excuse to get a new pre pro ;)

So is the lesson here to buy refurbished since they usually carry the same warranty?

Dunno. My 2803, which I bought in 2003, is still going strong (knock wood). Stuff happens I guess.

Be glad you still have time left on your warranty.

For most stuff that's my policy, providing the warranty is good. It's served me well through A4L purchases, haven't had a problem yet!

DOH!:eek::D

Well, okay, maybe I shouldn't be whinning like a little girl.:D

But you have to admit that it's at least a little disappointing when your gear has issues.

I think my take-home message is that anything can go wrong regardless of brand, price, model, or origin (Japan vs China) of the components.

My AVR-1705 is still going strong, and I bought that new almost 6 years ago. Love Denon, built like tanks in my opinion :)

I would probably take the Mac.

Video? I don't do any converting/upscaling since all sources are 1080p anyway.

No calibration of inputs?
No, I do the video calibration on the Optoma projector & Mitsubishi TV.

BTW, I'm thinking about getting another AVP-A1HDCI (refurbished) and selling the AVR-5308CI.

McIntosh is owned by D&M Holding Co. Who makes it? You think Mac still has a factory in the US? I seriously doubt it.

Did you do a hard reset or go back into the configuration to see if it may have reset, due to a power spike?

Yes Mac still has a factory in the US and yes some of the internals of the Mac are shared with the TOL Denon PrePro.
