I had the complete opposite reaction. After watching this movie a second time all I could think about was how slow it is, the action is few and far between. The premise of the movie is excellent and they could have done a better job keeping my attention throughout.

Overall I give Book of Eli a 6.5/10. Not bad, not great, an average Denzel flick.

Same here. I don't find this a great movie.

There is no character development for Eli (Denzel). What happened to him, really? Why can't he die? Did some god send him?

But I agree that Mila Kunis' performance is surprising. Considering that there is more in Solara's character than in Eli's, I wouldn't be surprised if the next book would be in her name. After all, she has turned to Tomb Raider at the end of this movie.

BTW, why does this movie keep reminding me of "The Road" starring Viggo Mortensen? Is it because the setting borrows a lot from "The Road" and there is more quality acting and character development in "The Road"?

I just saw the Blu-ray of this film. The audio track had my subs humming along pretty good. If you're an explosion junkie there are some real treats in here. Great violence too ... some gratuitous nudity would have been nice but you can't have it all ... can you?

BTW The Book of Eli totally smoked From Paris With Love.

I found it interesting that Denzel had a hand in producing this film without having it suck. For some reason I think that is the norm when actors get involved with things other than acting. Anyway, good film.
I really enjoyed the movie as well. In fact, I liked it at least as much as Avatar. Whereas The Book of Eli had some plot twists to it and kept you wondering, Avatar was primarily eye candy and the plot was completely predictable. I'm not surprised by your comparison with From Paris With Love. The trailers for that movie were enough to convince me not to bother seeing it....

Really enjoyed it. I thought the religious angle was a nice commentary on modern day society and what we're heading towards.

I thought it was OK. I'd give it a solid B+.

My favorite line from the movie was when Denzel locked Mila in the water storage place, "Hey! F you!"

Jennifer Beals is still smokin' hot. Has she had work done?

Just finished watching it and I rather enjoyed it. It kind of reminded me of Mad Max with a religious twist... my guess is there won't be a sequel;).

They totally could. It'd be called Book if Mila.

I thought you meant Jessica Biel and thought I might have missed her completely.
Like ... how do you miss that?

Not at all. Maybe you're too young to remember her, but Jennifer Beals got famous for a little movie called Flashdance.

I'm not to young ... but I was pretty high back then.
Why does everybody assume I am a punk? :D
I'm 45 years old you gutter snipe. :p

I never would have made the Flash Dance connection though. It has been a very long time and this road has been long as well.
That girl has aged particularly well. Amazing.

Wow, you're even older than me!!! :D

Yeah, she still looks great. That's why I wonder if she's had some work done.

What a segue! Washington and Beals starred in "Devil In A Blue Dress" in 1995. I really enjoyed that movie and lovvvvved the soundtrack, which I went out and bought right away.

I saw this again tonight on BD and really liked it again. I noticed something I actually missed the first time, which was that Eli is blind. Aside from the obvious suggestion because he reads braille, sometimes he makes clicking sounds that some blind people use like echo location.

I think Washington did a good job, but it wasn't much of a stretch for him. He is so good at playing those sorts of roles (silent but deadly sorts).

Mila Kunis was perhaps more surprising. She played the balance of strong and venerable. She is also gorgeous.

The movie was pretty interesting to me. I watched it with others and most of them were bothered by the desaturated and filtered colors. I'd give it an 8.

Great post. I also agree that Mila is a hottie. Look to see much more of her in the very near future. Well, at least, I hope I do.

Cheers,

This movie was a good rental I guess but fairly preposterous throughout. He's blind really? you wouldn't know it by him. Sure they add the little tell, but they exaggerate any possible human capability and I can't go along with that unless it is supposed to be a super hero movie. I mean seriously he has guys with guns all around him and he out draws and shoots them all dead how exactly? I realize that the 300-esque cinematography sort of works for the material but that doesn't mean I want to look at one more blown out movie. I sick of the aesthetic, come up with something else already! and the Idea that he could memorize the whole Bible? really? Can blind people have photographic memories? interesting question? Just being facetious here spare me the PC lectures. All in all I would say this movie is sort of lazy and dumb. It makes "Waterworld" look brilliant by comparison.

I'm going down to my local Block Buster to see if I can find a used Bluray of this film. Is worth buying or is it just a rental?

I don't think I'd bother buying it. I can't see watching it again.
