Just received my 6 month old textured black PB13-ultra from a nice fellow on Audiogon. He shipped it with a freight carrier that took great care of it all the way from Cali to Oklahoma.

I havent had a chance to hook it up , the sucker is so big and heavy i couldnt get it into the house by myself. So Sunday will not come soon enough!

My question is , i own a denon AVR-1909, i dont understand LFE quite yet and if I even have it. The seller gave me a monster sub cable. Is this all i need to hook up or am i needing another cable???

Thanks!

Pics will come this weekend!!!!

Congrats on the new sub. Pretty much the standard bearer of which most commercial subs are measured by. You have everything you need. You only need on RCA cable to go from the LFE channel on your receiver to the sub.

The Ultra is an awesome sub and if it's your first you probably don't know how lucky you are. ;)

Plug the monster cable into the AVR socket marked SW and into the subs low level input - the top one is fine to use. You can then read Batpigs Denon-to-English setup guide here http://batpigworld.com/index.html
and read some Ultra threads like this http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43032&highlight=ultra to get an idea of the different possibilities of tuning options on the ultra.

Have fun. :)

ok so i got it hooked up to a denon avr-1909.

Set the subwoofer channel to yes on AVR.

Set output to 0 db at first.

Set gain on sub to 1/4 way up.

ran test tone on AVR and it played the sound decently.

But when i play music or movie i have to crank the receiver to like -15db to hear anything. and the sound coming out isnt "hitting" its just playing the db kind of loud.

currently i dont have any speakers hooked up and i dont know if this is the cause of it or what but im frustrated right now.

any help?

Sounds like you could have a couple of different issues at play....

1. You really need a SPL meter - (Radio Shack model is the norm)
You need to set the volume of the sub the same or some like it a few db's above what the mains are set at for some kick. You do that with the test tones on the receiver adjusting each speaker to be the same volume and then what you like for the sub. I sometimes run my subs about 5-10db's higher then the speakers. But too much and the bass will overpower the speakers, you don't want that.

2. You may have your sub in a place in your room where you have an acoustic null in the seating position. There may be a need to move the sub to a different place in the room to get better bass.

3. You may have cancellations is your seating location - and your room could require Equilization to fix the peaks or nulls that you are experiencing by not getting a great amount of bass.

yeah ive thought about the nulls and yes i agree i need a spl meter which ill get tomorrow.

even if i play stereo mode on the tuner there really isnt a whole lot of bass.

ive got the gain set to half way now and still not a whole lot until my AVR reaches -15db or so. I usually watch movies at -20db

Dumb question, but are the mains, even without any, set to large? If so set them to small.

I wouldnt sweat it just yet. What size is your room? Your sub is still under warranty but probably nothing wrong with it.
When you say you barely hear any bass what source are you playing, the test tones? music? movies?
I have the SVS pb 12 plus 2 and if I listen to music or watch TV usually there isnt much bass at all.
check the test tone and see how much bass you get out of it.
Also put in a DVD that has some serious bass like Gladiator, Jurassic Park, Matrix, Master and Commander or something like that and tell us if you are wowed by it.
Make sure you set the crossover correctly as well.
Is the sub placed in a corner?

check the manual. My manual says only to plug into one. A spitter shouldnt make a differ.
Try a dvd.

this is a very good question, and wasn't directly answered - be sure to check what bandphan suggested... The speakers in the receiver should be set to SMALL or your sub output will certainly be crippled.

Only if your signal is weak than a splitter...could help. What is the subs trim level set on your avr? With my new sub the previous setting I had was to high...fwiw.

BTW...congrats:)

Check your crossover point in the AVR, as well as the settings on the sub amp itself. Also try changing your phase to reverse, that seems to help on all of my subs.

My crossover on the LFE on AVR is 80 which is default. phase and crossovers on the sub is turned to off since i have an AVR controlling it i figured.

Your avr should have an adjustment for each speaker ranging from -12dbs to +12dbs with zero being in the middle. If its in the negative range you'll get less output when playing music or normal listening. Test tones (or prink noise) will still be heard and will often sound louder than normal listening levels.
