That's when I decided to upgrade my speakers... :)

I went to one of the local stores looking for Paradigm monitor 7 speakers; this were to replace my Radio shack speakers. My budget was around $400.00.
After telling the sales person that I would be using the speakers for 50% music and 50% HT, he asked me if I would be interested in checking out the studio series by the same manufacture. I was amazed at the sound quality of these speakers. I knew at that point the $400.00 budget had to be increased. Got the speakers home and immediately felt that the receiver was not up to par (protection mode all the time). Started looking for a new amp....
Once a got a receiver, I felt that a system dedicated to stereo only would serve me better, at this time I was spending 80% of the time lessening to music. This is where I am at 6 months later. Last piece will be a CD player, still investigating this one, I play records most of the time.

thank you for all your comments...I am enjoying it very much.

here is a picture of the original speakers, now sitting in my store room.

The speakers are the only item that I got from a store, all the other stuff was purchased used from "Audiogon" or "canuck audio mart"

I don't care what people say about McIntosh gear, if I could afford them at least one of my setups would be sporting a bunch of it.

So, if you don't mind my asking, what did the budget end up at?

I was at the same situation. I was going to RBH to ask about their MC series and then the Roger convinced me to get the SE line. He gave me an offer I couldn't refuse. When the speakers got home, the receiver didn't do justice to the speakers, so I upgraded the receiver and BR. It can get expensive to go and look at stero shops.

It's amazing what a single audio purchase can do to a person. I can only imagine that it's like that first hit of crack - you just can't stop!

I hadn't made a significant audio purchase for about 15 years. Then, about two years ago, I tried to find a replacement tweeter for one of my Sound Dynamics 200Ti's.

Now, about $8000 later.... :D

I wish I could afford McIntosh or Rotels... :(
I remember sometime ago when I was testing Yamaha's NS-A636 powered by Rotel Amp (don't remember model, I remember I had to use only 1/4 of power - otherwise it was way too loud) they did sound much better (in a warehouse) than latter brought them home and powered with my onkyo 805 :(

I guess I'll try Emotiva's amp sooner or later...

Truth.

OP, I'm interested in knowing what your budget wound up being, also. Even on audiogon, the cheapest I’ve seen that amp is around $3500.
What exactly are you using the preamp for? Could you not tap straight into the amp?

He posted what he spent then deleted it. Some just don't feel comfortable giving out that information which I can respect.
