This is a project that is just starting

I am building a cabin in the woods. The back view is the national forest and will always look like it does in the picture below.

Here are the first two pictures:

The front of the lot as it looked last week; they are supposed to have cleared the area enough and level to start pouring foundation in the next couple of weeks.

Lot and where cabin will be, as viewed from the front across the street from the road.

Backporch view into National Forest-- This View will never change.
Note the black and white checked tape around the tree on the right side of picture. This is the start of a trail I buskwhacked and marked through the canopied, mature forest.

I will update this thread as progress takes place ;)

May I ask the name of the park, it looks like an awesome place, for solitude and restful chilling, I like that setting. :)

It almost looks like the Pinelands or maybe the Wharton State Forrest ??

Sam Houston National Forest. This access is from a private gated development, not a park.

And you are correct -- it is very, very quiet. Most of the lots have sold, but there is no requiremnet to build; only about 1/6 have houses on them. And actually none of my immediate neighbors have built or have started to build.

So your moving to East Texas. That's where my wife is from. It's gorgeous country. Just watch out for hurricanes.

Isiberian -- you are a class guy, thanks for sparing me :)
Yeah, he is a class act ... but I'm not. :)

Not for the hitchhiker tied up in the woods it won't be.

Hey Grizzly Adams,

Cool spot. How far to the closest fishing hole, bar and beer store? I'm looking forward to seeing the progress on the build and I can't wait for the Bose speakers to hit the seen. I know you got 'em. :D :p

Boat launch, Marina ( boat tie-up, no gas), swimming pool --about half a mile away.

Bose Wave radio maybe (already purchased 10 or so years ago) --or use the Sony XDR-S3HD

Quiet and solitude, Hiking, Bass boat fishing, swimming, Kayaking ---no TV or phone. Rocking chair on back porch facing forest. Both bathtubs are jacuzzi jetted.

Small stereo system with Cambridge Audio S30s and vintage Marantz amp and digital tuner and older DVD player

Later,

The Forest Man

Okay what Bose do I still have ? - 901s dead long gone ( they were in the townhouse with the red shag carpet and the waterbed couch with the black velour cover :D); 501s dead long gone; 301s for WX5, Yamaha PSR 550 and Pioneer VSX-4400; 101s were surround in gargage ( replaced with Kuro Elite speakers for rears), Center VSC-10 garage system, two Wave radios ( 10+ years old) one black with CD and one white without. I am reformed---please forgive me --no more Bose

P.S. - No stores or bars close, but will keep beverages in the refrigerator chilled to perfect temperature of 33 degrees

Never mind what we say about Bose. You go ahead a keep rockin'. Promoting them is kind of wrong unless you plan to bang the guy's wife after he buys them. :D

Outside Forms Set

Okay some progress.

They added tons and tons of dirt and have set the outside forms. The view are going to be fabulous :)

Some pictures follow:

Forms -View 1 ;)

forms - view of back right from the bottom of the gulley

forms - view looking left

forms -view looking right into green belt

And special note to Alex --- I located the two closet bars : Squeaky's and Borskey's . Boskey's is reputed to have the best hambugers and the coldest beer -- I decided to audition the place and they were right. Only problem both of these are about 10-11 miles away :(

That's nice. A short scenic drive. Make sure you drive around on the back roads during the day. There is some real beauty in East Texas.

My wife is from the sticks after all. :D

Looks beautiful. I could only dream of living in a location like that. Looks like you're going to need a wall in that back corner to support it. Any idea what kind you'll use?

I am having discussions with the builder as we speak. Hopefully he is going to put in a landscapetimer bulkhead.

It's a pretty part of the country for sure. The only drawbacks are the humidity and critters. But you get plenty of shade to help cope with the heat.

I'm sure you're already aware, but you may want a backup generator since the power goes out often in east texas.

Nice progress with your project. Is that a common practice out there to build up on a slab and not have a crawl space ? What are those squares wrapped in poly all about I have never seen anything like that before, really has my attention.
* I believe I answered my own question , just earth so as some areas get deeper concrete to make the footing meet code and the squares just allow enough for the slab depth, right ?

Not many houses in Texas are built with a crawl space. The soil isn't great for one. That's what I've always heard anyway.
