What the hell is wrong with kids these days?!?

I think that kids these days generalize too much. :D

My manager has this impression that college new hires are part of Generation (whichever they are) and are unmotivated and self-centered. Maybe his kids are, but I don't have that impression from the people that I meet. Two of the guys on my team fall into that age group, and they are both very dedicated and work hard. My officemate is one of them, and while his attitude is laid back and he can appear like he doesn't care, he works nights and weekends when the job requires it without being asked or complaining.

Just my two cents. It seems like every generation thinks that the younger ones have it easy and aren't as hard working as they were.

I used America as an example because it's all we really hear about. Plus, considering it's a first world country, it should have a proper education system, and smart children.

Personally, I prefer manipulating people when I get really angry with them. It's a fine art.

I agree with Sheep...kind of......in my experience education does not denote intelligence......and education is also not a prerequisite for intelligence.

If you start your years with no opposition or conflict you remove the decision making process that is a part of human existence. Coping mechanisms and reasoning/logic are cast aside and replaced with the one track, brute force "I want what I want attitude".

Eh, education has little to do with it. Its still the "family" structure that should prepare these kids to handle difficult social situations (school). We SHOULD only rely on our educational system to academicians and not "raising" our kids. I think parents rely too heavily on the education system and other social support groups where unprepared kids get destroyed.

KIDS DON'T DEVELOP SELF WORTH ON THEIR OWN. I'm sorry they just don't. Thats a staple in any psychological study. Its based on discipline/reward system. Please don't blame the kiddos. Its honestly not their fault. Too many parents are afraid their kids won't love them or like them... bull hockey... whatever. Parents need to be parents and crap like this just won't happen.

Education has nothing to do with behavior. Smart kids still do dumb things, and kids who aren't top teir can still be successful.

They are in more of a hurry these days to be adults, yet they have no idea what that means.

I hate to say it but if you wanna know whats wrong with kids, take a look at parents. The breakdown of the "family" has to be the number one contributor to issues like these. Plain and simple.
This is the root. My parents were there to keep me straight. When I curved I got my butt whooped. They were parents and while not rigid I knew what was acceptable. Never got punishment I didn't deserve.

Moved past "ape-like fights for power"? Really? I don't think so, we have just advanced our weaponry.
I'm talking small scale. You shouldn't have to bludgeon someone if they smudge your puma.

I'll tell you what is wrong. When you group a bunch of stupid kids together, they tend to collectively remain stupid. My son is ironically intelligent but lacks ANY common sense whatsoever. It irritates me to no end. I am a fairly tough parent and my kids still think that they can do whatever they want. I can take everything from them and they STILL don't care. They are apathetic and selfish and I didn't make them that way. They see their friends behavior and think they can be like that too. It is lemming syndrome - and it seems to be worse than ever.

You just described our older son exactly. I only hope the marines can fix it. Our youngest though is quite the opposite.

The Kida Are Alright

I agree w/ The Who... If you do any geneology and/or read old docs, newspapers... you soon realize all of the "kids... these days agruements" do not hold water. Media and speed of information may contribute to this misperception (IMO). I coach soccer and have greatly enjoyed it b/c the kids are GREAT... I take ofense to Sheeps slam at American kids ;) my two are very smart (due to getting their Mom's genes). But, I am more proud of them b/c they are considerate of others.

Relax, based on the kids I interact w/ our future is bright :)

I'm glad you have a positive experience with the kids you interact with, and I agree with your position on "kids these days".

However, the kids you interact with are like minded individuals, and make up a SMALL portion of the youth. Most of the children that seek after school activities generally stay out of trouble.

Small Portion

I actually do a mark and re-capture to ensure that the population of kids that I interact w/ are representative (statistically) w/ the world wide population of kids. Just so I can make these sort of statements. :D

Puma, as in cat or new shoes? Smudging someone's new shoes used to be the traditional response to seeing them.

OTOH, the new kids often got a swirley or a wedgie, too. Imagine finding out the hard way that the new kid is "going commando".
