I am flying home Thursday at 6 am to get my dog and family and drive out here to LA. I am planning on going the southern route as it is the shortest way. I am hoping to get coast to coast in 3 days but I have given myself 4. Its only been 2 years since I drove out to the east coast from here so here I go again...

That's awesome, enjoy the trip. You should map some dives local to your route and get some good eating in. :)

Please drive safe!

I love road trips.

I use a radar detector, but, just for speed traps, I only go like 8 over the speed limit. The longer the trip, the less speeding seems to help. Plus it makes you tired faster.

You got Sirius-XM?

Cool, have a good trip.

I've wanted to take a trip across the country for years. But I want to hit all the little nowhere towns that you only see in movies. I'm not sure why, it's just something I want to do. Can't convince the wife it will be fun though.

Be sure to carry auto pack (oil, gas, rad fluid) and a small extinguisher, my bro brought one when my family was travelling and it saved our car when the engine caught fire

Get a GPS!

If you don’t have one already, get a good GPS unit. Way easier to use than maps, the can help you with detours & such, plus help you find places to eat, get gas, use an ATM…very useful tool.

GPS and fire extinguisher, good advice. Radar probably too, but I think for every ticket I've got, it wouldn't have helped. X-country, they always nail me going to opposite way, and then turn to get me. Ohio once, South Dakota once.

If you do get nailed for a ticket, see what you can do about getting it off the record. Ohio ticket was many, many years ago, and I paid about $100 at a little wood cabin that they called a police station, and that's the last I heard of it. Two years ago, got one in SD, and that's on record, with a bit of a bump in insurance rate.... should be off in another year...

I paid the SD cop $100 right in his car. I thought/hoped it would be like the Ohio experience, but this incident, combined with the insurance hike will cost about roughly $500, maybe more, over three years.

X-country is pretty long and tiring, so good luck with that. 3 days is pretty much the minimum, so I'm glad you have at least one extra day.

Jamie, one more thing, southern route must mean I40, and dude, it's going to crazy hellish hot. The stretch between AZ and CA is a serious death-zone for cars. Just be careful; I don't know what you're driving, but you might even have to sometimes pull over to let the engine cool off, or drive for stretches w/o AC mebbe, which will mean that everyone is sweating like crazy. Just a word of warning.

If/When you drive through Az be wary of our extensive use of photo enforcement vans. They are more common as you approach major towns/cities but may be in the rural areas as well. They are designed to nab you at 11MPH over the speed limit but they are also required to post their presence with signs placed about 1/2 mile before you get to the van. In the Phoenix Metro area they have dozens of fixed cameras that will gladly get you. Here is a link to the locations of permanent cameras here.

So if you drive through the Phoenix metro area, smile since you may be on camera.:D

Jamie, whatever you do just make sure you don't fall asleep behind the wheel. None of us here would want to lose you. Just keep it safe as I am sure you will. Allowing (4) days should help ease some of the pressure of getting there. That is very good planning imho. Good luck on yout trip my friend. ;):);)

Cheers,

Phil

Have a good and safe trip, man! I just saw this, and you should be in the air right now. Have a good time with your family, and don't feel rushed to get across country in some set time unless you've got work to back to.

The note about photo radar in AZ is spot on. They've started putting those up on I-10 here in Tucson near downtown. The warning signs are pretty easy to see, though.

If you need any help or want to relax in AZ, I'm sure that there's plenty of us that would help you out! Same goes for the rest of the country, I'm sure.

I'd offer a spot at my crib, but I'm afraid I'm in the middle of moving. Good luck man. This sounds like a lot of fun.

Why would anyone in AZ care about how fast someone drives? It's not like there's a whole lot out there.:p

Have a good safe trip, Jamie. Road trips are great but be sure to stop and rest. Fatigue is a killer.
