"Messenger preamp" (but it's never going to happen)

Well; if you have to ask for price :eek: ........ It's not gonna happen

Listened to this once, first using Conrad Johnson Art-2 :D
Then switched to Messenger with the tube based power supply

Very very clear improvement from Art-2 and we're not talking subtle changes, and just by switching preamp.....  The Messenger.... if you listen to it once, you're probably not gonna forget about this..... but you can buy a new BMW for the same price....

Wow, that's what I call a subwoofer driver, thx for the tip Matt :D

What kind of cabinet will this driver require? must be huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge
I'll probably use a simple sealed box to keep the size down.

Put the T/S parameters into a spreadsheet that I have and.... limit of this spreadsheet is 146 liters, which I believe is 9 cu.ft.
According to this the system will have a resonance freq of 33 Hz and System Q of 0.77, which means it is even too small.....

And in-room response when corner loaded > 110dB @ 10 Hz ???

Or is there sth wrong with these figures.....

Probably something wrong...their are more than a few running them in sealed enclosures with excellent results. I wanna say something like 4cu.ft or course you'll need to EQ it a bit.

We want ported. We want ported. :D

But seriously 4 cu ft or larger for sealed. That's from the manufacturer too. However since you had 2 of the Kappas You could always build one sub the size of two kappas with a huge port.

Another to look at would be the 12" Axis.

I'm trying to down size a bit.;) 99% chance the next place I move to is going to be a much smaller place.

I agree, ported is the way to go. :)

Sealed is only for those with need for the smallest possible subwoofers. Sealed is always a compromise in performance for HT purposes. You will always have far more output (2x or more) at the lowest octave range for the low frequency sound FX in movies when using a proper ported system.

If I had a dedicated room sure, but huge ported subs don't jive in small, military housing type living rooms. In a small room a sealed Mal-X will still probably get me over 100/db at least to the mid teens I would guess.

+ the fact, ported 10hz output will be the size of a tank.

can somebody input this driver's TSP's in winisd and share the file? :)

Frankly, you may as well keep the Kappa Perfects ported subs and stack them. Two of these will outperform the single Mal-X in a sealed cabinet under 35Hz. Over 40Hz, the Mal-X will have a 3dB or so advantage. The Mal-X will sound 'tighter' because of the earlier roll-off, but you can get the same 'tight' sound from the Perfect cabinets by enabling a filter to cause this same roll off on the Perfect subs.

I don't know if that's the best one to put in a sealed box. But since we are down sizing I suggest you consider going with a sealed Shiva. If you interested in pretty small. The Maelstrom is going to require 24" across. The Shiva can be built much smaller.

In a 2.7 cuft sealed box it's still capable of 100 db at 16hz.

the maelstrom, of course in a 4 cuft box sealed get 98db at 10hz. and requires no subsonic filter. Remember sealed rolls off slower so at the bottom you can reap the rewards. It's ideal in a 7 cuft sealed box for that type of sub. Will put out 100 db at 10 hz. Which is insane

I can get away with one 7cu/ft box which should measure out to be a bit smaller than one kappa. I think Warps mal-x boxes are a bit smaller.

If I want a ported design and sth like 13 Hz tuning, how is this cabinet going to be?

Don't forget to put some rockwool in the box and use some dense oak bracing. 7cu/ft box would be bigger than the kappa. Once you add bracing and dampening it get's to be pretty big IMO. Your talking about a box a bit larger than a 2ft cube. At that point you may as well just use one kappa.

Tried to find any T-line projects with Maelstrom-X but couldn't find anything, anyone thought about this?

If you have these in a sealed cabinet and you want them to have flat in-room response to say, somthing like 11Hz, how can you do that...

As far as I know you then need a parametric equalizer that can compensate in that frequency area and as far as I know none of the digial parametric equalizers out there can do anything below 20 hz

I cannot hear this I guess but I can feel it, so it makes a difference

Do you want someone to design a box for you? Give me your desired dimensions and I can see if there is something to fit it. Be warned though the Maelstrom-X is being upgraded.
