Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a question. I have a pair of Altec Lansing Model 19 Voice of the Theater which I purchaced new back in 197?. They are in excellent condition. Because of their size, I have had them in storage for the past 20 years and am now looking to free up some room. What do you think the are worth?

Altec is getting premium prices for their older equipment in Asia. The Japanese are paying a premium for Altec. My Valencias are selling for US$5000 each!!!!!

I would list them on eBay and do a search there. Not sure what the newer models like yours are fetching but it should still be a demand product overseas.

Good Luck and and let us know what you find out!

I saw a model 15, the smaller version of the 19's, go for 3k about 2yrs ago. The 19's have the 15" woofer and are about 1/3 bigger, so if you are patient and find the right buyer, you might be able to get at least 4k for these, maybe more.

197? Wow, how old are you?:D

They are definitely NOT worth selling at a garage sale.

I have no idea what they are worth but, as a former owner of a pair, I can tell you the cone surrounds on mine were foam and they rotted out back in the 1980's. Be sure they are in as excellent condition as you think. Better apply some power to them and make sure the surrounds are still OK.

I take back what I said. The model 19's you have I am not familiar with. On my previous response, I should have said the model 12's are the one's I saw on e-bay go for 3k, with the model 15's being the larger model. Altec still makes a "voice of the theater" unit labeled the A-7. Does your model 19 look like these?

Ok. My memory sucks. the unit I saw sold on e-bay, I could have sworn said model 12, but in fact must have been the 15's. Now that I see the picture of the 19, this is the unit I remember hearing and seeing back in 1979 in a store here in Orlando called Sounds Unlimited ( they don't exist anymore). They were an amazingly LOUD pair of speakers. I remember they were hooked up to a rack of Marantz seperates (the old gold colored type). They were the only speakers in the sound room. If these are in good shape, you should be able to get the 4k previously mentioned, very easily. These are classics.

I own 2 sets of Model 19's, one set in walnut cabinets and a mint set of the oak cabinets that I bought a few years ago from Bill Hanuschak at Great Plains Audio. The value of the Model 19's these days is directly related to the condition they are in. I've seen recent sales of the 19's on Ebay ranging anywhere from $500 to $2,500. Typically, the foam surrounds that fit around the horns have detiorated, lowering the value of the speakers. If your surrounds have deteriorated or completely rotted you can purchase a custom made set of replacements from Debbie Darst whose husband also owns a set of 19's and has manufactured nearly perfect replicas of the foam surrounds. You can contact her at ddarst2 at carolina.rr.com. (The system wouldn't let me post the e-mail addy so I had to jerry rig it - not trying to game the system, just trying to help you out here). Good luck on selling your 19's if you choose to go in that direction. I always hate to see anyone part with his 19's, but am always happy to see a pair find an appreciative new owner.

If not, you can still get original factory parts to repair them.

I have read on the forums that the Asian market seems to be drawing the largest sums for classic Altec speakers.

Might be worth researching if you are not in a hurry.

I agree with the others though, they just do not make solid wood cabinets of this quality any more, or with bass drivers of this size. Mine are over 40 years old and are still used in my master bedroom system. You should hang on to them if you can.

1/3 bigger? The woofers are about 1/3 bigger. The cabinets are about 4 times bigger. Have you been in the same room with both? They would make a pretty OK surround system and there's no need for a subwoofer really. OTOH, there probably wouldn't be much room for one, either.

Ryanf,

Where are you located? I'm in central Wisconsin and am looking for a reasonably priced pair of Altec 19s.
