I am considering purchasing a new sub woofer for my home theatre and looking to get something that is a real bang for the buck. I am willing to spend about $600. Right now I have found a PSW 1000 that is on sale for $500. I also have found steal on an Elan THP 1200 SW, $350. Both retail for nearly double the current pricing. Anybody have any experience with either of these or have any other recommedations.

Thanks

That is not a terrible price for that sub, however Polk's subs aren't exactly their strong point IMO (and don't use their MSRP for gauging quality or actual street price). When you say bang for the buck, Polk does not come to mind. I am not familiar with the other sub. You have a good budget, so I guess what you should really be asking is what is the best way to spend $500-600 on a sub. I'd seriously be looking at www.svsound.com , www.hsuresearch.com , www.av123.com , and www.outlawaudio.com for starters.

How big is your room and what is important to you? Output, extension, musicality?

Right now I would like a sub that is really well rounded that will cover movies well and do music very well, mainly Rock, Pop and Rap music will be played. The room is still to be determined exact size. I have a huge room in my basement that I will be using it in intially, however i will eventually go to a more dedicated theatre room, which will be still fairly large, probably at least 18 x 20 or so.

I did some quick research and the A3-300 looks pretty sweet. I think it just slid to the top of my list for subs. At $450 dollars you can't go wrong. My current sub is so pathetic I am pretty sure I will be floored by the sound. I have been using an old 125 Watt 12" Infinity for about 12 years now and have yet to upgrade. Not to mention I have the MB Quart QLS 1030s for my front towers and they destroy my current sub. Thanks again.

Make sure you opt for the upgraded driver.... $25 more and puts you at exactly $500 door to door. That is what I got, and it really is a crap load of subwoofer for the price. You just don't get fancy wood veneering. Make sure you have space for it... they are big suckers :D

I have a PSW1000 and can't wait to upgrade. That being said here's my reason:

Let's start with the good points.
This sub performs exactly as the specs state. Overall good to great performance with MOST music. As far as looks go it gets high marks. It's rear ported, and with that in mind, relatively easy to make happy as far as placement. The amp is a BASH design, very effecient, runs cool, and has power to spare.

Now onto the bad points:
This sub performs exactly as the specs state. Don't expect to get much output below 30hz. This isn't much of an issue with music, however with movies the presence of LFE WAY below this is becoming more common. When asked to play material this low the pair of 10's bottom out rewarding you with sound not unlike tapping a coffee can with a spoon. The cave emergenge scene in Iron Man sounded like there were tiny metal workers hammering out bullet dings in the armor. Keep in mind the content referenced is well below Polks stated -3db point, and not a performance flaw.

Continued

Another gripe is the gain and xover controls are on the front making it a prime target for small children, pets, dust rags. This has led to more than a couple of "Hold on, let me re-match the sub level, then we can finish the movie" moments.

I actually would recommend this sub for a music only setup. Even at ridiculous volumes port noise is non-evident so long as there's nothing below 30hz present. At $500 it's a good deal, as long as you don't use it for movies or synth bass music.
Hope this helps some.

No, at $500 it is a horrible deal. Considering you can get a FAR superior ID sub from a place like eD that will eat that sub for lunch... for the same or even LESS money... I don't see how it is a deal at all.

eD has apparently had CS issues and reliability problems. Mike C has a few of their subs and wasn't all that impressed with their service.

yeah, i also just discovered one of the amps had an insensitive input while the other didn't.

I would go with the eD, there are many satisfied customers. You should also look at the AV123 MFW-15. They recently had a sale for 499 I believe on Black Friday. Both of these wouldn't be even close to the two you were thinking about

I haven't heard that. I found their CS to be fantastic. They went over everything with me over the phone, made sure I was getting what I really needed... then even called me on the phone to make sure my Sub had arrived and if I had any issues. Iv never seen that from a company before. And taking a single sample from a single person who had an issue with one sub hardly constitutes "reliability" problems...

$600? .. That's easy!

SVS pb10 - NSD

your 600 will even cover the shipping.

And all the polk subs I have heard suck imo. The best 12 inch polk I have heard falls way short of any decent 10 inch.

Actually, I'd be willing to bet my sub I will no longer be using, the little 8 inch Energy ESW v8 can outperform any 12 inch polk in every way!

(although, in this case, it's a 2X10 sub, but still ...)

By the way, when I said 600 would cover the shipping, for the pb10 that's Canadian pricing. That's how much it was going to cost me in the end, but I ended up getting an Energy ESW v10 for $380 total cost. I couldn't pass on that.

To the OP. Click on the link in Mike C's signature entitled sub opinions and tell me who's sub woofer advice you think you should take. The man is a walking sub woofer encyclopedia. Mike. If you had a gun to your head, and a $500 budget, and one minute to decide, which sub would you order?!

i'd probably die from a headshot. :D

because i'd rather save at least 176 more dollars to afford the SVS PB12NSD shipped. (or 126 more for the PC12NSD)

:)
