Hi all,

I am a newbie here. I need some help and Guide lines from you guys.

I would like to buy one AVR, but really confused :(

1. i am looking for good audio quality
2. If we are getting good result for Video up scaling/up conversion for analog (from satellite receiver) to LCD(HDMi), then i need that feature too.
3. I dont like to have tower kind of speaker, i need satellite type speaker
4. need 7.1

and more over my budget is upto $1200

i like the models given below

Onkyo HT-S9100

(onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=HT-S9100THX&class=Systems&p=i)

Onkyo TX-S606
(onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-SR606&class=Receiver&p=i)

Yamaha - Rxv-663
(yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=567571&CTID=5000300)

Harmon/Kardon - AVR 247

harmon - HKTS 11 (Speaker)

Do not look towards VP in the receiver at this budget. You'll have to hit about the 1k mark to make it even worth it.

If you say 7.1, I would cross off the Yamaha. That unit cannot matrix advanced codec bitstreams. OTOH, if you don't ever do bluray, or get something like a PS3 for that use, then forget what I said, as it CAN matrix mch PCM.

The Yamaha does have preouts, which is great, and the 606 lacks those. However, if you are just hooking up satellites, its possible that you might not ever need/want an outboard amp. YMMV.

I wouldn't use a receiver for hdmi switching - that said the 60o or 700 series are both fine!

Why ? i cannot able to use Blu-ray with Onkyo TX-S606 ?
The TXS606 will do just fine for blu ray as it will pass 1080p. However, it will only upscale to 1080i that is not coming in at 1080p. But if your blu-ray outputs 1080p, then this is not an issue. It will also decode the latest HD audio codecs as well. Your good to go. :)

I have another doubt... When i contact onkyo Distributor in uae abt TXS606's watts, they said 140/ch. But in onkyo website its says only 90/ch, so they said again that it will make 140w output on 4 ohms and 90w on 8 ohms. I would like to take TXS606 & harmon - HKTS 11 (Speaker). Is the receiver will damage speaker coz of 140W ?

Speaker Spec.HKTS 11
Recommended Amplifier Power Range : 10 – 120 watts
Impedance : 8 ohms nominal
Sensitivity : 86dB @ 1 watt/1 meter
Tweeter : One 3/4" dome, video-shielded
Midrange Driver : Dual 3" drivers, video-shielded
(harmankardon.com/specifications.aspx?Region=EUROPE&Country=AE&Language=ENG&cat=HCS&ser=&prod=HKTS%2011/230&sType=C).

TXS606 Spec.

Front L/R

105 W + 105 W (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.7%, 2 channels driven, FTC)
110 W + 110 W (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.1%, 2 channels driven, FTC)

Dynamic Power - What is this dynamic power stands ?
210 W (3 ohms, 1 ch)

Short answer is no as long as you don't turn the volume control past the point where the speakers start to distort (sound becomes unclear or just bad sounding). If you play your speakers loud but the sound is still clear and open sounding without a hint of harshness, then you arer OK. Just use some caution for the first while until you become familiar with the sound of your speakers before thinking about turning the volume up to loud loud levels.

Dynamic power is the ability for a receiver to deliver for a very short period of time, (typically less than a second or two) more power to the speakers than it would normaly put out. An anaology would be that of say a classical piece of music....where the music plays along at a nice volume level but all of a sudden, the orchestar plays extra loud. Hope this helps. :)

He said up to $1200, so a refurb, E-bay special, etc. Onkyo TX-SR875 or 905 would work. That would give him gobs of power, advanced audio decoding and HQV video processing vs. the garbage Faroudja that is in all the other units he listed.

Arunaloy, I hope you mean bookshelf and not satellite speaker. There are good satellite speakers, but bookshelves will still have a small form factor and give you good bang for the buck.

BTW, it looks like the OP doesn't have speakers, yet. Perhaps we should steer him (assuming he is named Arun) towards speakers first.

good point on the speakers. I didn't say anything because I sensed that the OP is sure he's purchasing them.

Garbage Farouda chips?? Times have changed, eh? ;)

I would look at getting last years Onkyo 705 for the same price as this years 606 for more power and better DAC's and more important preouts so that if later you want to add an outboard amp for more power you can. You can find the 705 at Amazon and Shoponkyo.com for around 350.00 This would leave you around 900.00 for a sub and speakers. I would order an SVS NSD10 for around 450.00 leaving you 450.00 for speakers. Now you really can't get much in speaker quality for that, but one speaker that is highly recommended in it's price range is the Insignia NS series for around 60-80.00/pair You could easily buy 8 speakers for around 300.00 leaving you 150.00 for HDMI cables at sites like Blue Jean Cables or Monoprice.com and a Radio shack sound meter tto calibrate. This to me would give you far better audio quality and a top notch entry level system that would rival alot of what your neighbors probably have.

Been looking around for a while and went after the 705.

The Denon AVR 3808 should work well.

Ah thanks, missed that. Going by the models listed, I assumed a certain budget. Perhaps the OP lives in a foreign land where these entry models listed do indeed cost this much... Agreed about stepping up from Faroudja.
