Pioneer 1018 troubles.

I bought the pioneer 1018 last week. I love it so far. But I cant seem to find answers to some of my problems. Maybe someone here will know the answer.

I have my HD cable box hooked up to the reciver: HDMI-in and HDMI- out to the TV. My HD channels look like they always have. Perfect. But the channels that are not HD look the same as they did. Not all that great. doesnt the reciver upscale my low def channels to 1080p? And if it does how do I get it to work?

Also I cant get my DVD to play through the HDMI out on the reciver. I have componet going in. Im trying to get componet-in and hdmi-out. But I cant. I have comp 1 set to DVD and sound in on dvd in. I get sound no picture. I have tried everything. Any help on any of my problems would be great. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum! Let's see if we can get you all set up.

The first thing that I'd check is whether or not the video conversion feature is set to "ON" (which should be the default). How to do that starts near the bottom of page 72 in the owners manual under the "Setting the Video options" section. The menu option is the first one on page 73, "V. CONV". You want that to be set to "ON", at least initially.

There is also a note on the bottom of page 15 (the page that shows the video conversion diagram) that reads:
"1 • If the video signal does not appear on your TV or flat panel TV, try adjusting the resolution settings on your component or display. Note that some components (such as video game units) have resolutions that may not be converted. In this case, try switching Digital Video Conversion (in Setting the Video options on page 72) OFF."

doesnt the reciver upscale my low def channels to 1080p? And if it does how do I get it to work?
This might also be fixed using one of the video options listed on page 73 of the owners manual. There is a menu setting called "RES" that is probably set to "AUTO" by default. You can change that to 1080p and see if it makes a difference. There is a note on that setting on page 73 that reads:
"a.When a resolution value is selected in this setting and the analog signals input are converted and output as HDMI signals, images may not appear depending on the video signals being input or the resolution of your monitor. Also, depending on the source component or the monitor being used, the output resolution may be different from this setting. Conversion to 1080p is available only for the input signals of 480i/576i/480p/576p."

So, you might need to set the output resolution on your cable box to something else in order for the Pioneer to upscale the image. That may or may not have a better result in the end, though.

Please let us know if that works out for you. We'll keep trying until we get it right!

OK i see what you are talking about. But still running into problems. When I got to the v.cov menu i can turn it on or off. Thats it. the menu doesnt scroll to get to the res selection. I dont know why.

My dvd player is a upscaling dvd player. So that might be my problem. It might be set too high.

Thank you for youe quick response. I will try and update you in the morning. Thanks again.

Hey, always happy to try and help!

The instructions on how to go about this begin on page 72 near the bottom. When you are in the "VIDEO PARAMETER" menu, you should be able to press the down arrow (on the remote, I'm guessing) and scroll through the settings listed on page 73. The first one is "V CONV.", and if you press the down arrow, you should then see "LFE ATT". As you keep pressing the down arrow, you will scroll through the list until you reach the "RES" setting. At that point, you would press the right arrow (or maybe the left arrow) to get into the available options for the "RES" setting. Once you've set it to what you want, you'd press the RETURN button.

That's how I interpret the manual. Have a good night, and I look forward to reading how it goes.

I have been trying to scroll in that menu for a week. But the V.conv is the only one I can do. And thats the first one by default. I have tried doing it in other video modes. But I cant seem to figure it out. any helpful hints? Thanks again.

Here are some things that I'd try:

1. When you open up the "VIDEO PARAMETER" menu, it's possible that it automatically goes into the "V CONV." settings. If you can instantly select "ON" or "OFF" for that setting as soon as you go into the "VIDEO PARAMETER" menu, try hitting the left or right arrow key to see if that brings you out into the main "VIDEO PARAMETER" menu, and then press the down arrow to scroll to the others.

2. Make sure that the DVD is selected as the source for the receiver. Then try the "VIDEO PARAMETER" menu to see if the other settings become available.

3. If #1 and/or #2 don't fix this issue, go to page 67 of the manual. Follow the directions to set up the DVD input so that the HDMI input is set to OFF. I don't know if this is necessary, but it might be based upon this recent thread (start reading where gryphon enters at post #7).

4. Send a private message to gryphon, who was having very similar troubles to you. You might need five posts before you can PM. If so, just post a couple more times here. Nobody is going to mind. :)

If that still isn't working, just let us know.

BTW, are you getting video from your DVD player now?

Not yet. I am about to start trying again. Starting to give me a small headache. It doesnt seem like it should be this hard.

Hey, don't let it get you down. If you're getting a headache, just walk away for a while. It'll get set up, don't worry. It generally takes a little longer doing it over a forum because of trying to diagnose a problem based on a few sentences (well, that and how long it takes to type :)).

It should be fun, and I bet that it will be once it's all working!

OK this is kind of crazy: I cant get the DVD player to work on componet in. But I can get it to work on composit in and hdmi out. But it looks like crap. Now with composit in I can select through the menu as we spoke about earlier. You think since my DVD player is an upscaling DVD player it doent know what to do with it?

Any ideas?

The upscaling could indeed be the issue. Try connecting the DVD player back up with the component cables, but set the DVD player to output in 480i (for now). See if that does it for you. If so, then you (with our help, if you want) can start tweaking the resolutions to get the best end result on your TV. Right now, though, we gotta get you some video!

If you'll let us know which DVD player you have, I'll see if I can find a manual. There might be something happening on that end, but the only thing that comes to mind is that you might need to tell it to output through the component video outputs (although, I doubt that).

EDIT: There are also two other options, if this gets too frustrating. One is to connect the video from the DVD player straight to the TV. The other is to connect the DVD player to the 1018 using component cables, but then also connect the receiver to the TV using component cables (in addition to the HDMI cable that you are using). This would allow you to get the component video signal from the DVD player to the TV without any conversion. You'd still play the audio through the 1018, but you'd need to select the proper input on the TV when you switched between cable and DVD (a little added hassle, so hopefully we'll get the conversion working).

OK...I have a Samsung dvd1080p7 the TV is also a samsung DLP 1080p.

I will try and change it to the lower 480i for now and see what I get.
Thanks again you have been a big help. I will let you know what I find.

Just curious - why not use the HDMI output on the DVD player?

LOL good point. I guess I couple go buy another cable. I guess I just got wrapped up in trying to get it to work that I bypassed any other options.

I hear ya! I can get the same way.

I'm positive that you can get it to work with the component video, but the HDMI would be the easiest hook-up. :) The 1018 should process the audio from the HDMI just fine, so you wouldn't need to hook up the audio cable from the DVD player to the 1018, either. You could send it 1080p from the DVD player without worries, that way.

In case you haven't shopped around for HDMI cables, you don't need to spend a fortune on one. Some of the ones in the stores cost around $100. You can get good ones for a lot less (one example is from monoprice.com).

You're very welcome. I'd sure appreciate it if you'd give us an update after you get the HDMI cable, or if you get the component cables to work. Thanks.

Wow! Lots of patience you got, good man, let's see if you still got em...lol
I got a sony 1080p LcoS kds-r70xbr2.....yam 5051 receiver 8 yrs old, but works like a champ. ps3...oppo dvd, cable HD dvr. Ok, toying with pioneer 1018, HK 354.....still open to suggestions..... I want the new lossless audio codecs, and my receiver doesn't do HDMI. $500 - a grand. My issues......I don't think any video upscaling is important because of my tv, and hdmi can't upscale any more than it is.......I would love a nice on screen display not just for set-up.......I mean onscreen on my tv........a usb would be terrific.......and above all...I want to be blown away by the new lossless audio the way I was blown away by HD......got your thinking cap on.....

Welcome to the forum!

I'm heading out for a bit right now, but I'd suggest that you start a new thread asking about a receiver for your particular wants. You can also search this forum (and others) - there are a lot of the same type of question from other people who are looking for the best receiver for their needs.

If this question is still open when I get back, then I'll look into it for you. I have some typical suggestions, but I want to make sure that they have everything that you want.
