Thanks Adam. I'm going to keep working on it and then I may have to call BB to see what they suggest as Pioneer isn't open on the weekends for customer service.

Flipping through your owner's manual, some things caught my attention:

Page 31: Make sure that the input signal choice for the input that you're using for the DVR is set correctly.

Page 72: Make sure that the receiver is set up to process the HDMI audio. Unless this can be set up individually for each source (and it doesn't look like it can be), then this isn't your problem because you are getting audio from the other source.

Page 88: Troubleshooting for HDMI issues.

Well, the audio is passing through to the receiver through the HDMI as PCM and I only hear the audio when the receiver is set to pure direct. If I set the DVR to pass through, I get no audio.

I have thought about just sending the audio via optical cable, but I don't know how to assign a certain digital input to coorespond to the HDMI. I have the DVR on HDMI 1, but it wont let me change any HDMI 1 settings when I go through the menu.
If you use DVR/VCR1 to select you DVR, then you should connect your DVR's digital output (say optical) to the receiver's OPT3 terminal (P.68). This is the default setting, you can assign the inputs differently (see P.67).

How would I set the audio to OPT 3 when I have the DVR at HDMI 1? I have to select HDMI 1 as the input to see the picture, so how would I get a picture if I have to select DVD/VCR for the audio portion?

I still think that you should be able to get audio over HDMI. Did you pick that as the input signal for the DVR (described on page 31 of the manual)?

Regarding using the optical input for your audio:
What input do you select (on the front panel or remote) to watch/listen to the DVR? I know that you've said "HDMI 1", but I was assuming that was just your selection for the assigned HDMI input. Perhaps not.

Let's say that you are using "DVR/VCR1" as the input that you use for your DVR. On page 67, it discusses how to set things up. You should be able to do the following on the "Input Setup" menu:

Input: DVR/VCR1 (or something similar to that...I don't know the exact name)
Digital In: Select the optical input that you used
HDMI Input: Select the HDMI input that you used
Component In: Probably doesn't matter, but I'd set it to "Off" if that's a choice
S-Video In: Probably doesn't matter, but I'd set it to "Off" if that's a choice

Yo, P-Dawg. How great of a deal was that 3800? You paid $1200 for a lot of frustration. IMO, take the difference between whatever you're looking at, and that's how much you'd be paying for a shot at happiness. Non-deal receiver costs $1400 = $200 paid to be happy.

If you have not changed the default setting. When you press DVR on your remote to select the DVR, the receiver will output the source signal connected to its OPT 3 input terminal.

You say you have to select HDMI 1 to see the picture, did you mean you have assigned DVR to HDMI 1. If you did, when you select DVR, using your remote, the receiver should output the DVR video signal from its HDMI 1 output.

By the way, you said you could hear the audio when you selected pure direct so I wonder if you have connected the analogs from your DVR to the receiver. If you did, that may be the reason. On P72, it tells you if you select HDMI audio to "THROUGH" then no sound is output from the receiver. It will just go to your TV. You have to select "AMP" for it to go to the receiver.

Welcome to the forum, fastwahoo! Sorry to hear about the untimely demise of your first receiver, but I'm glad that you're enjoying your 92. Those sure look like nice units. I have a VSX-1015 and really like it.

OK, I selected TV and my input, and at the input setup I set up TV to HDMI 1 and OPT-1. I get a picture but still no sound unless I have the cable box sending LPCM. If I set it to auto or pass through, the receiver recognizes it as Dolby Digital, but I don't get any sound. So where is the problem coming from? If the receiver is getting a signal but not putting out sound, is it the reciever, or is it the cable box since it seems to put out sound when LPCM is selected? All I know is I used the digital optical out on this cable box with my old receiver and I got Dolby Digital with no problems. Could my receiver have a problem playing Dolby Digital?

I thought (may be Adam too) you were talking about your DVR hook up. If you are have TV selected to HDMI 1 and OPT 1 is the default setting for TV anyway according to P.68so you should be getting DD if your cable box can output bitstream and you have it set up correctly. Is it possible that you have changed the default setting and your receiver is not longer outputting the signal from OPT 1?

Have you try hooked up a DVD player yet and see if the receiver will output DD from its COAX 1 input (again, default setting)?

I know the receiver is getting the signal because it is showing Dolby Digital when I select the digital signal and it gives me the same using HDMI as the signal. I dont have a DVD player as I use my PS3 for Bluray and DVDs. The PS3 is working great but thats because the sound is being sent LPCM. For some reason it is just not sending out sound when decoding Dolby Digital.

Yeah, I set the DVR to auto and I se the receiver to auto as well, which it then selects Dolby Digital, but I don't get any sound.

try unplugging the optical cable and chage the setting in the 92 to reflect the same, and use the hdmi for audio. Is it possiable that your box cant output digital through 2 ports at once?

Originally I had the audio going through HDMI and the receiver was set to receive the audio from HDMI, and the receiver would show Dolby Digital through HDMI, but still no sound.

May be you should reset the AVR to restore all factory default settings first, and go from there.

This receiver was a floor model, so the first thing I did when I hooked it up was to reset to the default settings. But thanks for the suggestion. I'm wondering if I have a faulty dolby digital decoder.
