now that going for box ultras instead of cylinders have been decided ...

I'm kinda bored to go with textured black since I already have two, piano gloss is a no-no. there are no finishes to match because since this is a dedicated HT, lights will be off anyway. which is the better finish? (has anybody seen both personally?)

Oak

or

Rosenut

(borrowed DTS's picture)

I want 4 Ultras at the least (but only have the wife go signal [and money] for two) - i was thinking dual oak and dual rosenut (for the 4) but figured maybe I should go for 1 oak and 1 rosewood first and then the last two will come in the finish I like. wife likes oak, i think rosewood would be closer to my HT floor and walls which are both reddish (though this doesn't matter to me at all)

or if there's a resounding vote for a particular finish, I can go all for that one.

I'd go with keeping them all the same finish personally. As far as picking one out thats a tuff choice and one that i've been trying to decide myself if I go with the Ultra . I'm bored with the piano blk to because my Veledyne has that finish even though it is beautiful . I think the rosenut is the most rich and is what im leaning for, originally I like the textured until I saw a close up of one on the b-stock photo And I really dont like the texture . For me the oak would match the best though because only a few feet away is my dining room/kitchen table thats pine and matches really good along with all my kitchen cabinets are like a light oak and its connected to my den but im afraid would clash with my black ash paradigms, black component rack, TV stand ect. So IM thinking a nice compromise would be rosenut and would blend the best for me since it will be directly in my HT section and the black screen front on the sun might balance it out. So unless a killer deal comes up on the B-Stock on another finish I think im going rosenut and think you should too :D

I have the SB12 in Rosenut and the finish is very nice. I'm sure Rosenut is some kind of combination of Rosewood and Walnut and it is definitely brownish red. Like most finishes, its appearance varies slightly with lighting. When the lights are low or off it appears more brownish and kind of disappears; in the full light of sunlight thru the blinds it is noticeably red.

I do think it looks somewhat sophisticated and it actually looks good next to brown couches and cherry wood furniture.

for what it's worth, the textured black of the ultra is VERY nice. best description I have is it looks and feels like a teflon pan.

I didn't know it was a combo of walnut and rosewood... probably why they dumped walnut as a finish.

I agree though that the rosenut finish is the best in terms of "darkness for HT, yet wood finished for beauty"

on the other hand, my current bedroom's floors are beech and closer to Oak than rosenut will ever be and probably will NOT fit in anywhere BUT my HT.

I would keep with the color scheme and go with the rosenut. It kind of matches your floor and walls. I want just 1 of those subs. I wish I could afford it now but alas, it will have to wait.......Mike you are my sub hero, that is kind of like 2 sandwiches in 1......sweet:D

Rosenut for sure, and I absolutely hate you for getting 2 ultras, when I can't even get one :( But I bet it will sound awesome! I wonder how long till SVS comes out with Dual ultras, you could just do 2 dual ultras, then you would have your 4 ultras... sorta!

i'm not looking forward for the ultra/2 ... (ok maybe one of those would be cool, I heard it would STILL be front firing, dual drivers up front, gotham like)

but it should be like the plus/2 and plus relationship wherein the plus/2 will have more upper bass capability, but one or two single pluses will have more low bass capability :)

i'm going nuts holding out like this.

i do have a "last chance" to save money, i'm sealing two 5 foot x 6 foot windows on the left side of my room with 3/4" MDF/Plywood. here's to hoping that can keep the bass inside the room.

I have the Plus/2 in both Rosenut and Piano Black, and I have to say the Rosenut is a far richer looking product, and its much less maintenence department. If I were to replace my Plus/2's with Ultra13's both would become Rosenut as well.... Its just a much more stunning piece of furniture to me..

I voted rosenut as well. I always seem to like the darker woods/colors than the lighter ones for all furniture- couches, tables, speakers, subs...

I like the Oak and was going to order one, but I got a chance to rescue a Rosenut from return to SVS. Turns out my Red Oak floors are a better match with the Rosenut, so I kept it. I do have oak furniture too, but everything is darker than the SVS oak finish. Voted for RN.

Of the two selection my vote is for the Oak. Actually, I prefer the Maple finish. Either way, it would be hard to go wrong with any of them. Just wished I could afford an Ultra 13. Perhaps one day I will.

Cheers,

Phil

I think Rosenut is actually Rosewood veneer, but given a more reddish finish than traditional Rosewood. The veneer pattern on my SVS is very similar to both sets of my Rosewood speakers, but the color is definitely more reddish than brown. In certain lighting conditions, the Rosenut and Rosewood seem to match perfectly. In other condition, the red on the SVS really stands out over the Rosewood.

I voted this morning, but didn't post at the time. I'm a big fan of the Rosenut finish. Heck, I almost ordered an SB12-Plus because of that finish. Later, I almost ordered their latest speaker package because of it. It has a nice warm color to it. I like Oak, but more for kitchen cabinets and less for audio gear.

I voted Oak, because i think its the better looking of the two you have in the poll. However if it were my decision to make i would go with Black. Thats my take on it. I think you are getting a very nice sub, whatever the color. Im like Phil, maybe one day i can afford one of those :)

Peace,
Tommy
