Velodyne DLS vs. Monster subwoofer

I have mentioned this subwoofer in another thread on this site but I want to hear all your thoughts and experiences on Monster subwoofers; particularly the THX SL100-DSR, and the THX SL200-PSM.

I have auditioned the Velodyne DLS 5000, 4000, and the 3500 at my job today and was unsatisfied with the unrealistic and flabby bass it produced. I plugged in the monster THX SL200 and had very tight, accurate and life like bass. I know mosnter products are very overpriced but the bass that the monster produced blew the velodyne away.

Any of you own or heard the monster subwoofer?

never heard the Monster sub. but i refuse to recommend Monster on principle.

ANYTHING within your budget from these two brands will probably beat the crap out of the Monster sub.

I have an SVS PC-Ultra and love it, but I have no experience with the Monster subs. Like Mike, I'm not a Monster fan, but I am a big fan of people buying what they like.

Can you get a discount on that sub from where you work, especially as it is discontinued? If so, it might just be the ticket. After all, you clearly seemed to like it. I'd just suggest that you consider whether you can return it or not, or what the restocking fee would be, if you decide that it's not what you want once you get it home.

Were you listening to the subwoofers, or listening to a speaker setup properly blended with the subwoofer?

The subwoofer itself, if set up properly, won't sound very good *on its own*. It isn't meant to. It's only meant to reproduce low frequencies. All the higher harmonics, etc. shouldn't be coming from the sub, but rather the main speakers. So, a sub, on its own, won't sound too "snappy".

The Monster subs are listed as producing rather high frequencies, which, if properly calibrated, they won't be producing in an actual system setup.

Well yes I played them with an almost similar setup that I have at home minus the receiver. At my house I have two RTi12's running from an Onkyo 574. At my work, I had the RTi A9 running from an Onkyo 875. I ran those two with the velodyne and in my opinion, the bass sounded very uncontrolled. The monster did a better job of keeping it tight and smooth. The velodyne's had a rather hard time in doing that.

I know velodyne is a nice subwoofer company, however i was not too pleased with their sound. Certain frequencies would be louder than the rest and I am looking for a sub that will complete the RTi12's and produce a very flat sound across 20hz to 20khz

Please do us, yourself and the American business community a favor and never buy a Monster product. These snakes should be out of business. Buying their products won't help accomplish that end.

I'm not familiar with the Monsters at all, but I do have two Velodyne DLS-4000R's. I get flat response (well, +/- 3dB anyway) down to 25Hz. I wouldn't characterize the sound as flabby or unrealistic. At least, not in my room (15x21x9). I think the Velo's are very competitive in their price class. Just my humble opinion, of course!
