Is Tony Royster Jr. the next best drummer?

The only other drummers I have seen that are in his league are Neal Pert (Rush) and Danny Carey (Tool).

Her is Danny Carey's set (old):

If you understand how the Mandala pads work you'll know that having that many of them (there are more now) is no small feat.

I am a huge Rush fan. Neil Peart has been, and is, my favorite drummer. Danny is fantastic(Huge Tool fan as well), but I have to put Tim Alexander(Primus) as my second choice. On the other hand, I haven't seen any of them do some of the stuff Tony is doing in these short clips. But, they are short clips. If he continues to get better, I do believe he will be the next to hold the torch.

There in lies the issue. Neither Danny nor Neil has ever done the "short clip solo", nor has Royster been affiliated with any major band. Tim is great on kick drums but is not as technically sound with multiple rhythms like Carey and Pert. I own nearly all of the Primus albums by the way, and he is fantastic.

Carey sounds like multiple drummers on a number of tracks, as does Pert. Carey admits his weakness is the kick drum, particularly the speed on the double bass pedal. It does not seem weak at all to me though. :)

now that Peart's been mentioned - my current fave is Gavin Harrison

Swerve (jazzy)
Futile (Porcupine Tree tune)

if you're going to catch King Crimson on tour this year, Gavin will be playing drums

I have one Porcupine Tree cd, but I honestly didn't know the drummers name. Watched the clips, along with several other that came up on youtube. That dude is superb. Very tight.

depends on which PT CD you have - I think Gavin started with PT on In Absentia (2002). Prior to that Chris Maitland was the drummer.

for more Gavin, you have to get Porcupine Tree's Arriving Somewhere... live DVD released last year. Sounds awesome

Shannon Larkin is in my top ten for sure. One of the funnest drummers to watch live. I love my Changes dvd from them.;)

Sully is no slouch either.

Drum battle from the Changes dvd.

Look at my Avatar, I have almost everything Godsmack. The whole damn band is awesome, and underated IMHO.

Lars Ulrich from Metallica is no slouch either. A true road warrior too. But not like Niel Peart who is like a God to Sully and Shannon of Godsmack.

Tony is in a jazz band, and a hard rock band. What other genre has talented drummers?

Just for the record, Neil Peart is also a jazz drummer.

And, I have learned about Gavin Harrison in this thread. He is also a jazz and rock drummer.

I dunno, what genre would you consider Dave Matthews Band? Carter Beauford is one heck of a drummer.

I have to add a couple of names: Mike Portnoy, Alex Van Halen (hello!), Kieth Moon, Ginger Baker, Buddy Rich, Vinnie Paul....

you know, come to think of it, yeah, Jazz and Rock (metal) is about it. :D

The best drummers I have heard have all been jazz. Especially Elvin Jones and Billy Cobham.

All good names, and all current/past best.

But, I am speaking of the next best. Tony is young. Very young, compared to the others mentioned. I don't think he has peaked. Not even close. That is what I mean by next. Every time I see something new from him, it blows me away. And every time, he has at least doubled his skills.
