in reference to the logans, their sweet spot isnt as limited as in previous years, but are in need of good positioning, and set up, and depending on which ones you listened to, would be in need of a sub depending on your musical tastes. Logans need at least 3' from the wall and like to be adjusted in as well as up/down depending on seating.

Linkwitz Lab recommends placing dipolar/bipolar speakers 4 feet from the front wall and at least 2 feet from the side walls.

How do you know how much space the speakers will need? I heard the Mozart Grands.

Sorry; had to burn through a post to place the pic.

I haven't got much space to place the system. I figure I can squeeze the 6 1/2" X 37" Mozart's between the left and right sides next to the monitor. The center speaker can go between the PS3 and the 360 on the shelf just above the monitor and the receiver and amp can go in the cabinet under the monitor.

So; do you think there will be a problem with the tight spaces? The tech who showed me the speakers yesterday said it would not be a problem; but, he'd probably say anything to make the sale.

this is the formula used for minimazing standing waves:
distance from the wall= celing height in inches x .618
distance from side walwidth of the room in inches / by 18 then x 5

odd rooms will require compromise, so good Eqn and with treatments you can compensate.

this a general rule, and 6" tweaks would be used from hear

Holey crap! My ignorance is showing!

Hight 90.0 X .681 = 61.29
Width 184.8 / 18 = 10.2666 X 5 = 51.333
Length 152.4

HT space is 151.2 X 153.6 with an open office behind and path way beside the couch.

Now this helps me about as much as if I asked you what your last PTT was! :D

Thanks for the specs! Please show me how to apply it to calculating the best position for my speakers.

h would be x .618 not .681 = 56inches just under 5' from the back wall

with your side walls, thats the that would be at 4' from each side wall based on your measurements,

again arrangements of room and furniture will not always permit, so start in 6" inciments and work around.

these are optimum

remember your trying to achieve bass responce and tightness, stage width, and pinpiont imaging so tweak a little at a time

If your room is 13' x 15' x 8' (L x W x H), assuming you are placing the speakers along the Width side of 15', I would place the front Left & Right speakers about 3 -4 ft from the side walls & 2 ft from the back wall.

If I had a large room, I would place my speakers 6 ft from the side walls and 6 ft from the back walls.:D

If the speakers are going along the Lenth side(13'), then I would place the speakers about 2 - 3 ft from the side walls and 2 - 3 ft from the back wall.

Damn I messed up big time! 15.4 X 12.7 X 7.5 (L x W x H) The monitor's on the width side 12.7 (as you guessed). Sounds like I have too much crap!

Guess I can always get a bigger LCD in a few years and move it all down to the basement (when I finally figure out what the heck to do down there. I might be able to squeeze 2 feet behind and beside for the speakers.

I think you can start with 18" from the back wall and 24" from the side walls. So which speakers are you interested in? Do they have woofers on the side or back of the speakers?

After reading your's and bandphan's recommendations; I thought I'd focus on the Mozart towers. They have separate highs, mids, and lows and are completely encased. I don't know how this would affect the over all sound quality; so, I'll punt it to the pros.....

That serious -20 dB dip around 3 kHz is what worries me, but perhaps the experts can chime in.

That does not strike me as a very positive review. it seems like you would have to work pretty hard to optimize the sound on this speaker.

Given your limited room dimensions, I might consider other speakers with a more "neutral - flatter" overall frequency response.

Also, it's a 4 ohms impedance speaker, so you definitely need some good beefy amps. What kind of amp/pre-pro are you using?

I feel like I'm speaking to Stephen Hawking! :D

"That serious -20 dB dip around 3 kHz & Also, it's a 4 ohms impedance speaker."

I've never really gotten the decibel or the ohm explanation. Know of any links with a very simplistic approach to explaining it?

Well as far as amps/receivers: I still like that Denon 3808CI; (that's what I heard the Viennas on) but as you all recommended I put it aside and am only focusing on the speakers.

Well I still haven't gotten to hear the Quads as there's only dealer out here. Maybe I'll keep looking.

Oh, yeah, I think that Denon 3808CI should be just fine. Okay, you're good on that receiver.:D

The best speakers I've ever heard personally are the Quads and they're the benchmark I judge all other speakers against. I suggested you listen to them just so you have a point of reference, but realistically you don't have the space nor the budget for them. If you can't find a dealer it's not the end of the world that you don't get to listen to them. Buy based on sound quality and what you like - take reviews, opinions, and specs as a guideline, not as a final word.

In way over my head!

Thanks all for the references. The water variation makes the most sense of it. I'm one of those hands on people; so I won't really "get it" until I can get a hands on approach.

I think one of the best options "for me" is to get the speakers, learn as much as I can about them, and design a home theater around them.

I think I will pass on the Quads then...the show room is an hour away anyway.

I really like the config of the Denon and it's got that mic to help optimize the sound. Aside from moving the speakers and listening to there effects for what may take months.......what I don't like and can't improve can be corrected whenever we get around to finishing the basement.

That's just my thoughts though.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with the Denon 3808. There are other equivalent and even better receivers at higher cost, but the 3808 should be a great receiver.

Are you checking out those speakers at Best Buy Magnolia?:D

I guess the good thing is that they will let you try out those speaker at home and return them within 30 days, right?:D

LOL! I first heard the Viennas with an Onkyo TX-NR1000 at Sound Advice; but, it was way over budget. They are notorious for screwing their customers with refurbished crap. I found the local Best Buy had the same set of speakers and receiver and it was love at first sight!

I just can't buy something online I've never heard or seen before.....a lesson learned from the Infocus POS projector!

Heard anything about BestBuy selling referbed stuff or majorly screwng their customers? I'm not sure whether to buy directly from them or use an online retainer.
