About $13K retail, btw while it is very important to match the L,C,R channels it is not in matching the rears unless they are obviously out of sink in spec and material's they employ. For music it is a whole other story.
I am sure some will call me out, quote me and add oposite opinions but I have been in this game for nearly 15 yrs and have had several systems from JBL, Def Tech with all matching speakers and several without and it doesnt matter.........but it looks great on dealers revenue sheet and D^@k measuring contests, infact some speakers makers have such a weak spot in the surround lineup that it would be silly to incorporate them, tho these days that is less and less an issue.

$350 for 5.0 HTIB. It was 30% off.
$200 for 2 towers. They were 50% off.
$240 for sub. It was 40% off.

I gave the 5.0 away and spent another $350 at the HK ebay store for an upgrade. What I thought was an upgrade.

I just bought Speakerman39's speaker package for around $600 and am selling some of my current speakers to pay for it. When I put it like that it sounds retarded.

or a lot more...

Retail values
Fronts: $2700
Centre: $1000
Sub: $4000
Reciever: $1600
Total: $9300

I didn't pay retail prices for it, but near enough, hah. I've yet to get my surrounds, simply because I've yet to find a deal on them that I will spend the $$$ on.

Also, I've heard many systems from the 100 - 300 range, many from the 1000 range, etc. I've no doubt that my system performs better, in all aspects to the ones I have heard. So from my experiences, yes, you will be improving your experience as you move up the price ladder. I do believe however there comes a point of diminishing returns, but thats a whole other topic and one I'm woefully inadequate to describe fully.

$300.oo

or a lot MORE!

My reason for asking this question is that my wife thinks I've lost my mind wanting to spend 1k for a 5.1 system :p from SVS (SVS SBS-01 5.1 system). I've been trying to up-grade from a HTiB Curtis speaker system 40w (one speaker per speaker) and a 40w powered sub for two (2) years now:mad:.
She also thinks there is no way a 1k speaker system will sound any different than say a $500.oo or even a $300.oo one :(. So if I could get some data and personal feedback from HTS members to show my wife just how little I'm wanting to spend to get good sound, maybe she'll understand and then again maybe not .

Thanks to all the reply,
hyghwayman

The best way to get your speakers: Take her to the best restaurant in town, buy her roses, massage her feet, and tell her she's the best wife in the world, 9 out of 10 you'll get your speakers.

Doesn't that undo your post # 5 to Guangui then? :p

The question in the title says it all...there is no other question. The data is simply price. Right hyghwayman? If there is more than that in the op, it has missed me...there is but one interrogatory (question) in there. That is what I am "saying" (stating, actually, as saying means spoken...and you don't want to hear what I'm saying now :p). Just kidding. :)
The Data was amount and Feedback was for info; stories of what you have, how you got your speakers and the difference a few hundred bucks can make.

Now I would like to Thank all of you who have replied:D

Thank you kindly for the clarification hyghwayman. That helps.

I asked for as much from you in my post #9...

And one interrogatory (that is a question) is but posed in your op. So you understandably understand my confusion. No? :D But thank you for quoting me directly and acknowledging my post. Cheers.

Ohhhh. The love between you two. You thank him...he thanks you, and whatever else happens stays in Vegas. I get it.

The point is hyghwayman: You failed to ellucidate that rather simple and plain fact in your op. You do so now, mind you with the aiding and abetting of your cohort. I get it. Believe me, I get it. I'd rather not, as it's not my cup of tea...but to each his own. You guys have at it...it's a free country.

Perhaps you could chime in sooner, hyghwayman, to explain your post to the masses. Your one interrogatory has now morphed into:
1) stories of what you have;
2) how you got your speakers;
3) and the difference a few hundred bucks can make.

Btw: both you and your cohort were here for the first five minutes after I logged on. In fact, you even were in this thread after my last post (# 34). And now you've both disappeared. Together. Again. What's up with that?

The JBL's I have now were around $300 I think.

The Monitor 11's I use for music retail for $1200.

The next set of surrounds are going to be Paradigm, either Mini Monitor's or Studio 20's (I know there's a huge difference but it's going to be for movies only not critical listening) and an SVS sub. rough math puts it at $2000 - $4000.

Damn it's amazing how easy it is to spend money on better equipment once you start to hear it.

Take her to the store and let her hear the difference.

I have $4350 in speakers alone, not counting any electronics. I started out with a modest inexpensive system & I knew it's limitations & that I wanted to upgrade gradually. All the time my wife didn't see the point & thought I was nuts. Sound familiar. But as every upgrade arrived she did comment on how much nicer it sounded.

The clincher was just recently, for Christmas I bought her the Celine Dione DVD of her Las Vegas show. Without exageration when I had it playing (pretty much concert level) she was so moved by the emotion of the show that she was crying. After it was over she actually commented that now she understands what I'm trying to accomplish with my system. It's all about the emotion of the performance. That's something that a HTIB can't even begin to approach. Once your wife experiences that, she'll understand.

You need to convince your wife to give you a $500 Up-front cash Plus a Home Theater Allowance of $100/mo.:D

Then get 2 front speakers first. As you have your money in your HT bank, you can slowly add the other pieces.

I spent $7,500 just for the 5.1 speaker system. The retail is actually $10,000!
