Roommates play speakers very loud, dangerous?

Last night I was in my room and my roommates were using my speakers. They had some girls over and as usual they were trying to impress them pretending my entertainment system was theirs. They were playing music and I don't mind them using my stuff but it seemed incredibly loud. I went out into the room just to see how loud it was and when i got there it was so loud that the tweeters were making these really horrible loud popping sounds. I quickly turned down the volume. I don't know a whole lot about speakers other than the fact that I love them. And I was wondering how bad is this for the speakers? I am going out of town for a month in a few days and I was considering disconnecting them because I really don't trust my roommates that much.

Playing loud is OK for a speaker as long as your not pushing the amp into clipping, or distortion. But there is also a limit to what a speaker will handle.

I would kick some butts if I was you.

Gritty sound can be amp clipping, which can also damage speakers if it happens too much. You ought to suggest that your room mates do that to their own speakers.

Agreed. Anytime a speaker is making noise that is unnatural, distorted, or not supposed to be there at all that can cause damage to the speakers or amplifier/receiver.

Tell you roommates that if they would like to impress the ladies that they get a proamp and some PA speakers. If that is too pricey for them, tell them to get some Cerwin Vega speakers, and a used stereo receiver. If that is still to expensive for them, tell them to get a component system or at least a pair of huge Pioneer, Kenwood, or Sony speakers and connect them to a used stereo receiver. Tell them to do that or keep the volume down on your system, because if they blow the speakers they are going to fix them, regardless of their reasons for why or how it happened.

Actually, I would approach your roomies and maybe even their gfs that if they value their normal hearing, that that was the last such incident. Or, they better have health insurance for hearing aids for the rest of their lives in the near future. Such levels can cause permanent damage.

Yeah, that's a tough one........I always had my own stereo and was not afraid to crank it Buzz Lightyear style.......(i.e. to infinity and beyond!)...
I also was fortunate to have a friend from my home town for a roomie.

At school I saw tons of strangers thrown together in dorm rooms. Some did well, some did not. You need to find a nice way to tell your roomates that cranking your stereo to 11 is unacceptable. Also, pulling the plug while you are gone is not a bad idea, although they might take it badly. If you are past the point of wanting to be buddies, f*#k em and pull the plug. You are nice enough to share your stereo, and if they are abusing it, you need to protect your property.

That popping sound was more likely (clipping) yikes!

thanks for the responses. So the sounds coming from the speakers was definitely "clipping". I think they speakers are still ok(any way to tell for sure?) Haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary while using them recently. These guys are my good friends but I definitely feel used sometimes so I'm not sure what to do. I'd feel most comfortable disconnecting the speakers while I'm away but since they're my friends its a pretty big douchebag move.

Roommates suck. Just before my massive Christmas upgrade last year, one *** that was living here wasn't treating my stuff the way I wanted. I didn't even trust him to leave it alone if I unplugged stuff or removed cables, so I just sold all the old stuff a month early and did without just to be a **** myself.

I hate bad roommates, and I've had plenty. Too bad they're your friends...

Personally if it was me, I wouldn't pull out a fuse, or try to dodge being the bad guy. I would look them right in the eye, and tell them to leave your stuff alone.
