Has anyone ever owned or investigated Toshiba LCDs?

I was pretty much decided on the 46" Sharp D82U but all the talk of 'banding' has me a little nervous, although I haven't really been able to see any such thing with the store models.

Enter Toshiba with their new Regza Cinema Series (46/52LX177) and once again I am second guessing myself. The Toshibas are full 1080p with a boatload of features. Any opinions or experience with any model of Toshiba LCD?

I don't know anything about Toshiba's but banding was a large concern for me too when buying an LCD. I ended up calling Sharp and asking what their policy was on the subject. I was specifically told they would send a trained repair tech to my home and if he saw the problem would have the TV replaced no mess for me the repair tech would even reinstall it just like the original if I wanted. That settled my mind so I ordered the Sharp online. I got it nice and easy and surprise no banding and I have checked. I wouldn't let the banding issue worry you too much I have read much good about Sharps support on the issue.

Be careful. I was studying the Regza line and I believe the LX is a 1080p panel but only accepts 1080i via HDMI, whereas the LZ model accepts 1080p inputs. Just something to beware of before you open the wallet. It seems there are quite a few manufacturers touting 1080p panels, but their HDMI inputs only accepts 1080i max resolution. Philips, LG and Toshiba are three that I remember off hand. Then Vizio has 720p panels that will accept 1080p signals and scale them to fit their panel which just seems odd.

The HL models are the ones that only accept 1080i over HDMI. The newest LX models accept 1080p60/24 over HDMI (at least according to listed specs). The LX models do only accept 1080i over component though. I think Sharp is the only one that can accept 1080p over component but how many devices will actually output 1080p over component?

I've owned many Toshiba CRTs and have generally been very happy with them so the new LCD line up caught my eye.

It's only 720 res but it accepts 1080i input. I've had it since Halloween and had not one lick of problem with it. Great picture, the internal ATSC tuner picks up more channels than I ever imagined existed here.

AFICT, it accdets 1080i over component because that's how my (comcast) HDTV box is hooked up and it outputs 1080i.

That's about all I can say, except that I would buy another Tosh without hesitation.

There is a new Sceptre that will accept 1080p over component, I don't remember the model number though.

A couple of points...

1. I was initially very excited about this set. After seeing it, granted on an uncalibrated set, I thought the CR was relatively poor, especially when compared to Sharp, Sony and Samsung. Furthermore, I thought the picture overemphasized the greens. In the end, I wasn't too impressed.

2. Even though this set "accepts" 1080p/24, it will not display it at 1080p/24. I don't think there is a single set out there that does.

just my 2 cents

I found a thread on AVS about it and reports are slowly trickling in. Some have mentioned 'green push' but I take all of that with a grain of salt. I have yet to see any set of any kind that accurately tracks 6500K grayscale ideally (according to tests in reviews).

I'm now going to wait till sometime in August before buying but I'd really like to see the Toshiba in person. My eyes wouldn't really notice red/green/blue push anyway but big clouds or bands will surely annoy me. So far no reports of banding on the Toshiba.

I've also been following a couple of the threads over at avs. I'm dying to get a tv, but will also wait it out for another couple of months before I pull the trigger.

As a disclaimer, I don't mean to hijack this thread and steer conversation away from the Toshiba. But a couple of other sets that I've been strongly considering, and may interest the original poster, are the 50pz700u 1080p PLASMA from panasonic, 71 series Samsung CCFL LCD and 81 series LED LCD also from Samsung. I haven't yet committed to one technology yet. Both the Samsungs have not yet been released (sometime in August, I believe) and claim to have significantly improved black levels which are supposed to narrow the gap between plasma and lcd. But again, initial prices on the Samsungs will be high, especially on the LED backlit display. So it will probably be worth waiting it out so prices can settle and any potential problems with the new technology to surface. It's still pretty frustrating, nonetheless...

So... I keep checking the AVS thread about the Toshiba LX177 and the opinions are evenly split between green push and no green push. So far at least, nobody has claimed any banding.

You just can't tell from those kinds of threads. Some people that claim 'green push' probably have no idea what they are talking about and others say you can only see it when comparing to another set. It's kind of like the erroneous comparison between receivers where one says this receiver is louder at -20 than the other. If they aren't calibrated identically, the comparison is worthless.

Anyway I kind of like the Toshiba and want to see it live in person. It just may be a better choice than the Sharp. As usual, I have decided to wait just a little longer. But I promise, one more month or so and I am picking one...I'm tired of waiting and no set is going to be perfect.

Exactly, there is always something you won't like about every set. The only real complaint I have about my Sharp LC37D40U is the slow response to remote commands. Since I only use the remote for input switching, it's not a huge deal. I think when people complain about a shiny "piano black" bezel it's hilarious. If I turn my lights out, the TV practically dissapears.

The green push is one of the reasons I bought the Sharp over the Samsung and Sony's I looked at. Realistic greens seemed to be almost impossible on some sets, and a sometimes thing on others, but the Sharps did it right, so that's how I went.

Whew! For a second there I thought a troll jumped in here and derailed this thread. Must have been a dream or something. Please, continue.

I am waiting for my wife to get home as we speak with the SUV so we can go to Sears to pick up our new 42HL167. I will post my findings tonight about the green push and some pics with PS3 1080p upconversion. Netflix blu-rays won't get here until tomorrow :(

Ok got it all set up. Right now all I have is PS3 going through HDMI and directv box going through s-video. Time warner won't be here until friday for the hd. These are just out of the box pics no calibration whatsoever and from what I see no green at all.

PS3 1080p

PS3 720p

PS3 480p

Directv 480i

And for some eye candy Tekken 5 1080p

I'm not color blind and I swear those trees in the background have some green in 'em. But it's a minor point. :p

On a more serious note, however, congratulations and thanks for the pics. Keep us updated.

The question is are the rocks in the Lord of the Rings shot greenish when they should be more grayish? I haven't seen the movie in quite some time so I don't know. That is the kind of thing that can easily be mistaken for green push.

Unless you see a green halo around an object that is definitely not green, I wouldn't call it green push.

That doesn't lokk green to you? The rocks have a green tint, the sides of the buildings have a green tint. Once you get used to this set you will start to notice more and more.

The colors are off but it's not because of green push. I have seen pics of the really bad green push tv's at avs. Once I get the avia disc in I will post some after tweak pics. There is no green aura around the image which is what all those green push tvs look like in the forums.

I might as well post this here as well so everyone can see the apparent green push that my tv is suffering from since studdad decided to call me out at avs and next thing is for him to say I am a toshiba employee.

I took another shot of the same two towers shot on my old panasonic tube tv and here are the results.

Panasonic Tube

Toshiba

Notice the green still there on the rocks where it should be. And here is one last shot of "The Queen" bluray where you could definitely see green push if there ever was one.

Either I am colorblind or there is no green on that shot. I mean for a tv that is supposed to push green down my throat I don't see much other than the chairs. Next thing you know he will say that the chairs at Buckingham are not green!

Now I am not some sort of Toshiba fanboy as if the tv did indeed have a problem I have no problems putting it in my SUV and driving 5 minutes to my nearest sears to return it. What I do have a problem is having a troll insult my intelligence.
