Fedex just dropped them off 2 hours ago. Here are some pics.













In the last pic you can see parts of the very old gear im replacing. The C150 center should be in tomorrow and I have yet to decide on a new receiver/pre/pro/amp.

Lol yeah that is my first tv I ever bought 6 years ago. Still runs great to this day, gotta love the reliability of CRT's. But my wife said the same thing that the tv now looks super tiny and we need a new one. But we were going to buy a 42" hdtv this christmas anyway. The box beside the TV is a sony sub.

Also I was wondering about break-in; the manual mentions 50-100 hours but I am unsure how that works. Do I just play music on them at low volume 24/7 or is there something specific I am supposed to do?

Even though I myself don't truly believe in speaker break in. I would adhere to those instruction. Just listen to your music at low to moderate levels untill the 50-100hrs are done, there's no need to let them rip out of the box. I myself let the cd player play into the night and while I was at work.
Otherwise, enjoy your new speakers and you may or may not hear a difference, after the break in period.

Ahh ok thanks I will do just that. One thing I really noticed is that they definitely need more power. My little sony receiver just can't cut it. Also I have some blue jeans 12awg wire on order.

I wouldn't put much into the break in theory. My Energy speakers were supposed to be broken in, but I had them cranked the second they were first set up, and guess what? They still sound the same.

Those are beautiful speakers, but I think having inside that little wall will hurt the reflecting nature of their design. Maybe pull them out so the top driver isn't so close to the wall.

Yeah they are there because of the wife. She won't let me pull them out a bit. But it actually isn't that bad because in that corner 4ft above the speaker there is an arch. It's hard to explain but it's like the sound hits the arch and spits it out. They fill our open living room very well.

Manual says to leave at least 1 foot between the speaker and the back wall. Right now they are 1.5 ft from the wall. But they also come with optional port hole covers so that you can put them right against the wall if you want.

I was also wondering, the 150 surrounds will be here by the end of the week and I will be wall mounting them on the back wall which is right where the couch is. How high above the couch should I mount them? I was thinking 2ft above the couch which would put them at around 1ft above the towers. Is this ok or should they be higher?

Most surrounds should be mounted no higher them 24" above ear level.

But I don't know anything about the Mirage speakers. So I don't know if the same applies to them.


And your mains state 1' from the back wall. How about the side wall?

Actually I just re-read the manual and it states they should be 12in away from all walls. Will the side wall really affect performance that much? I haven't noticed a reduction in sound quality so I will just have to wait and see.

Try pulling them out into the room 12" from the walls and see if you can hear a difference.

Not to worry about the break-in even if it is in the manual. The marketeers put that out, not the engineers. Just play it normally.

Others commented here already, you need to move the speakers out of there is you have a choice and the wife approves. Maybe she can listen and see which position she like better?

The speakers are 8 ohms nominal and 90dB spl in room sensitivity. How powerful is your receiver? How loud do you need to play that?
If you play it at 90dB continuous, pretty loud, that only needs 1 watts of power. I couldn't take those spl levels continuously.

Have you noticed the color on the TV change, yet? That sub magnet, if not shielded, might alter it being so close.

this topic is has been debated into the ground. As I recall, it wasn't only the marketing people, whom made those claims !!
These break-in threads, got out of hand just like the subs wars do.

That little Sony sub looks just like my WM250. It's actually a nice little sub within its own limits. I'm still running mine with my Athena AS-B1.2's and it seems like a complementary match.

It is a Sony STR-DE675 100x5 receiver. So far I haven't had to even turn on the sub for music. After some tweaking with the EQ on the receiver the 550's are putting out some pretty tight bass. So far the highest volume I have heard them at is midway on the receiver and it's pretty loud in our living room. Once I get my blue jeans cable in I will be pulling them out so I can show my wife if there is a difference in sound.

I haven't had the chance to test 5.1 output as my center hasn't arrived and the surrounds arrive on friday. But as soon as they get here I will be testing the home theater aspect with Die Hard DTS.

Dont worry to much about it if it sounds good to you; we all have to work within the constraints of real life. My wife told me that my speakers could not be more than 4'' from the rear wall. Everyother day I moved them out by one inch until they were at 12" and she never even noticed.

Geniuses must think alike Greg because I did the same exact thing with my speakers . My girl told me they were too far from the wall when I first put them up so I moved them back and inched them forward ever so slowly and she never noticed :-D.
