i just got a hsu vtf3ho with turbo, i was playing the test cd that came with it at about half volume, and then it stopped hitting and there was this nasty "burnt pretzel" smell coming from the ports now it hits but really quietly id say at 1 percent of what it could before and sounds really krusty

You done blowed it up. Contact HSU. Hopefully they can send you out a replacement driver.

i was playing the test cd
That explains it all! :D

Seriously though, some information on test discs really is for testing only. How long have you owned the sub (how long had it been working normally)?

If it was not up very loud at all, there may have been a defect with the sub or amplifier. Do you know which piece failed? Pull the woofer and check it out. Test it with a diffrerent amplifier. It it is fine and does not smell, it is probably the amplifier.

it was the supplied test cd from hsu, and i have had this sub for about a month, but just tried it out yesterday, as that was when the ht was getting wired up

If it was the first time it has been hooked up and running, things point more to manufacturing defect. I am assuming it was not being driven very hard? What type of test tones were you running through it at the time?

Half volume on the receiver or half volume on the sub's control?

Depending upon the output voltage of the receiver, half volume on the sub can be way too high. I know my SVS PB-12 Ultra wil make full power/output at just over 1/4 on the sub's gain control.

If the receiver was at half volume and the sub's control at 1/2 it could potentially still be an issue.

Just wait for it to cool down overnight... and it will be fine...

Sine waves are probably what you were playing and heated up the voicecoil, there is a plastic like substance on the voice coils to protect the wire, that probably heated up and made it stink. When it cools it will be fine... although it will continue to smell for a bit...

I was told when you fry a driver, you will be getting a loud screaching sound from the driver, so just give it a bit of time and try it out tomorrow...

BTW Babel... I wasn't playing test tones when mine got really hot... just playing some really heavy bass tracks extremely loud... and giving my sub more of a workout then I should have been...

Dr. Hsu and all the CSR's at Hsu will tell you never to put the sub's gain at more than the 9:00 position (about 1/8th volume). I think it's even in the manual that came with your sub. I own VTF-3's and this setting (on just one sub) is PLENTY of volume to rattle the windows of a very large room.

In all the years (six) I have owned my VTF-2 I have never needed to go past 8:00 so I know what works. I am curious as to why if Hsu tells the user to limit the gain to 9:00 or less, why not have a built in limiter? No big deal, but I am curious.

I have always wondered that about alot of products.. why allow settings that can damage your product and void the warranty... Its like building a car that has a "special" brake pedal.. Step on it too hard and the car falls apart...

So was I. It's there to offer flexibility to the input. It can be turned higher, but only under conditions that limit input volume, I gather. Yeah, it's stated by everyone, but I think it ought to have a BIG RED WARNING against too much Smeagling. ;)
