Daylight Savings Time is a sham. It has been since it's inception. Routinely proven to be absolutely ineffective for any of its purported usefulness such as saving energy or any other argument that has been posted in it's favor, including it's benefit to commerce.

Why is the Senate coming together over this random POS item?

How do you feel about it?

Please discuss.

*walks away.

LOL if we're going to keep it then it puts us permanently out of sync with the rest of the world's time zones is one thought. I do like the daylight hours it generally affords, for my own purposes, but don't think those are particularly relevant. I would like to stop having to change my non-internet clocks, tho.

Seriously, I have no life.
I am fine either way. Right now it is darker longer in the morning, hard to wake up. ;)
My solar panels don't care either way, Same day length.
Oh, my DTS clocks didn't change on Sunday so I manually set them. The on Monday I had to set them back an hour.

But what does High Noon mean if the Sun doesn't hit its Zenith until 1pm?

;)

Is it now High One?

Personally, I lean towards longer day.. It will be darker in the winter mornings so more soccer moms will drive up auto rates..

You out there with a sundial or something? Where you live is noon high overhead like that ? (outside of dst of course.....which reminds me, what will we call that down the line, pre-dst? :) )

I'm bored. Thought I'd try stirring up something...
and I wanted to see how long my thread title lasts.

For the record, I think it's lame, permanent DST. There really is no point to legislating it. People will do what they want, when they want. The arguments for it have all been largely debunked and it comes down to some bizarre preference as to what time you call it for sunrise and sunset.
Most people think sunset wins, it would seem.
I like the idea of Midday being when the Sun is at it's "highest" point in the sky. Just more natural like that.

Next question...
Will the computer-verse break when we turn off the need to change between ST and DST?

*shrugs

Don't know why I called it dsm, I corrected it to dst but you captured it first :)

I'd rather have worldwide continuity on this myself, rather than certain parts of the world such as just our own. I don't think I ever saw anything that seemed like a good reason for dst, was it just an energy usage reaction? Can make scheduling logistically a bit weird (having had to do that for the international business I concentrated on). I had home work times generally in the range of 0700-1900 range and did appreciate in the nicer weather of the year (in the US) for recreation.

I may be mistaken... I think it started as a wartime effort to save on candles and oil during WWI. I am uncertain as to the WWII resurrection of it, but have heard that Germany embraced it for similar reasons. Post war, it became a gimmick for commerce (staying up late and going to the mall, movies, eating out, etc) and the supporters used energy costs (less expenditure on AC, lighting...) and farming as reasons to perpetuate it.

The farmers reason has always been my favorite. Like they're sitting around going, "Well, the sun's up but it's not 6 am yet so I can't get to work..."

We in the state of Arizona are so badass that we don't even acknowledge DST!

I don't miss it either.

Hey, the U.S. is still one of the only places not using the metric system so not too worried about time sync. I for one will not miss DST.

Ever since I was young, I always had heard switching between standard time (ST) and daylight savings time (DST) was done by politicians seeking to favor the farm vote. Farmers, we were told, didn't like going out to their barns & fields in the dark. That made about as much sense as banishing sunset.

At various times in our history (WW1, depression, WW2, 1972 Arab Oil Embargo, etc.) DST was invoked as a savings effort. It never made any sense. I distinctly remember Tricky D!ck declaring year-round DST during the Arab Oil Embargo. He claimed we would use less energy lighting & heating our homes if our clocks stayed 1 hour ahead of ST . That lasted about a year, if I remember correctly. It was repealed because it was widely disliked – almost as much as Nixon!

The only benefit from DST was noted by oil companies. As early as the 1930s, they realized they sold more gasoline after switching to DST, as people drove more in the evening. When DST switched back to ST in the fall, less gasoline was sold. So they always advocated more DST. The last time Congress changed the ST-to-DST switch dates to the weekend following Halloween, lobbyists from the candy companies (Big Sugar) joined those from Big Oil to advocate the change. Not surprisingly, that was during the W administration.

And now the Senate wants year round DST. Go figure! What lobby group has joined Big Oil and Big Sugar?

I remember hearing something along those lines too.

Just get up earlier!

If you have kids, especially little ones, DST sucks a$$ big time. I've been saying I'll vote for anyone that gets rid of it. Dumb as hell we still have it. Same with standard measurements.

I got that backwards. It was the farmers that didn't want DST. Cows and horses don't have wristwatches. Corn and wheat go by the sunlight. So do the farmers.

In Europe we call DST quite simply Summer Time, and living in Scandinavia I prefer summer time all year round as I'll have more light in the afternoon during winter.
Thanks for the Wikipedia note on this subject. There's a lot more to it than I remembered.

Still, the arguments for year-round DST don't make sense. If we have DST in the mid winter, it will be dark until well after 8 am during December and January in the latitude where I live (39° North). No one will like that.

I lived for two years in Anchorage, Alaska (61° North). I forget when the sun rose in mid winter, but there was a total of 4½ to 5 hours of daylight each day. Standard time or Daylight time didn't make much difference.

Don't even get me started with our failure to switch to the metric system. That's a RANT subject for another day.
