Rewatch: 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (Disc 1)

Okay. Gave the UHD Blu another try last night after I repeatedly said I preferred the 1080p Blu-ray (the latter in proper widescreen without any letterboxing) on this particular title, as I didn't care for the 4:3 aspect ratio of this release (and given the fact that I didn't think the 2160p resolution or HDR grading really added anything to this super-low-budget splatterfest from Sam Raimi). My sentiments were pretty much the same -- way too grainy/noisy of a print and far too distracting of an aspect ratio with regard to the side pillarboxing (this "original" full screen version on Lionsgate's UHD Blu cramps the visuals in to a degree that it almost feels claustrophobic...though many viewers/fans felt this was a perfect emotion for this drive-in/grindhouse-esque experience). I just don't care for it, which is what I said about Zack Snyder's Justice League and that film's 1.33:1 IMAX ratio...it just made everything feel far too closed in, even though we were getting additional information on the top and bottom of the image, especially for a huge superhero blockbuster like that). These films just don't look right, to my eyes at least, playing back on a 16:9 widescreen display with the significant side pillarboxing.

At any rate, while I did find similar elements to complain about while watching the 4K disc of Evil Dead for the second time (since owning it), I was able to let my guard down several times and just take in the mayhem onscreen without over-analyzing the image quality and aspect ratio (I still hold to the opinion that this film doesn't really benefit from the Ultra HD treatment and looks just fine in 1080p high def or even via a good DVD transfer; most of it just comes off as super-soft, out of focus and hazy, which, of course, can be blamed on the photography, budget and film stock). It wasn't half bad once I just got sucked into the absolute gory lunacy going on, but I think I still prefer the 1080p Blu-ray and its screen-filling 1.85:1 enhanced widescreen transfer in the end.

Great movie. I cant' tell if this movie or Idiocracy is more predictive of the future.....Sandra is so cute as always..
Totally agreed, my friend.

Every time we take this off the shelf to watch, I can't help but turn to my old lady and say "Behold....our future....and VERY soon....."

It truly is incredible just how uncanny the parallels are between this film and our changing reality -- how we're moving to a one-company retail rule (the whole Taco Bell element in the film is something I've predicted is coming to America, at least, with regard to one corporation taking control of everything -- I've regularly said Walmart is going to be the Taco Bell of this reality, with that store basically being the only place you're going to be able to buy ANYTHING), the totalitarian society constantly being watched, the way they lo-jacked everyone via in-skin chips...

The only direction we're not headed in with regard to comparing the events in Demolition Man with reality is the "happy happy joy joy" society that evolved -- there is NO WAY the human race, in the cruel, evil, selfish and mean-spirited state we're in and moving further into, is going the way of a super-peaceful society like that unless we're implanted with something to make us obedient and open to suggestion (a la Divergent).

So, in the words of Simon Phoenix, forget seeing all those "pussy-whipped robed sissies" running around in control of our every move; not gonna happen given the god-awful, vomit-inducing status of the human race.

As for Bullock, yeah -- she's a piece of ass in this. She's such a nasty bitch of a human, though, so it's difficult to find something to like about her when watching any of her films (Miss Congeniality, The Proposal, et al).

On a side note, Stallone has promised a sequel is in the works, but it's been swirling around for some time now, so who knows when it will happen; he's definitely interested, though, and wants to proceed.

I didn't get to see it this weekend but will let you know when I do.

Interesting thoughts on the "happy" version of the future. My two favorites out of many books on dystopian futures are still 1984 and Brave New World. At least to me, 1984 was the more brutal road to totalitarianism (Soviet style) versus the more "maternal", or happy road of BNW. The main reason being the population taking happy drugs to keep them in line.

I read a book a while back on how both authors did communicate with each other about their ideas. Orwell ended up agreeing that BNW was the more likely path the West would take (Orwell did suggest that Huxley got some of his ideas from earlier works).. Allegedly, the great George Carlin agreed: "When fascism comes to America, it will not be in brown or black shirts. It will be in Nike sneakers and Smiley shirts."

Anyway, a combo of Divergent and BNW? Who knows. IMHO all best writers of the genre, Philip K lord helmet is a personal fav, are anti establishment thinkers to the core who hate concentrations of power and where it leads...
Enjoy the Bat!

1984 is happening now right before our eyes....

Watched this again last night to do some tests to see if I could improve my TV's HDR performance; someone on another forum mentioned that he messed around with his Samsung's "Motion Lighting" setting (found under the "Eco Solutions" menu, which contains controls I normally leave completely off) and it seems to have bettered his panel's HDR picture quality. I tried turning this "Motion Lighting" on, but it didn't seem to make any difference on my Samsung in terms of punchier HDR highlights or reduction of blooming (the latter of which I get in spades on my edge-lit panel).

Do you disagree with my assessment?
In the US, I lean more to BNW short term leading into Idiocracy later on....as for other parts of the world, more 1984. Depends on the countries history if that makes sense.

BTW, funny you picked the Fugitive now. It's one of my fav. St. Pats Day movies. Also, State of Grace. Very 1980s NYC...
