Should Home Theater Embrace Gaming to Save the Industry?

No, not for HT, gamers will ruin this hobby. I'm already seeing it in the display market. We're in the era of throw-away TV. Those gamers care less about video quality and more about gaming features. We can't allow millennials to dictate the course of the HT market for gaming considerations. Those kids that games don't care anything about audio, they demand multiple HDMI 2.1 ports on TVs when there's a great chance there will never be more than 2 games consoles that require HDMI 2.1 on the market at the same time.

You sure about that? I'm a millennial. Look at my sig, does it look like I don't care about audio? When I sold A/V the main point I always made was that video was half the equation and audio was the other half. You're missing out if you spend on one and not the other.

The other issue is that if speaker manufactures jumped on the big gaming thing, they may have to start embedding RGB LED lights into everything and then you'd have to have new AVR's that have RGB LED control for sync and everything.

Wut? As a geezer the game I played most hours on is NetHack, a game where patience is rewarded! And no, it ain't no stinking e-sport either!

That said I do have a monitor with hardware color calibration so that 3D games does not mess the colors up. Several games on PC makes changes to LUT to implement graphical effects/look which of course destroys any software calibration you have.

I think the RGB stuff is stupid. I did when it came out, and I still do. My PC is a black box with a blue light on top to tell me it's on. RGB in stuff doesn't make sense....having said that I have an RGB mouse and keyboard, but they're only lit so I can play games in the dark.

Lights are distracting.

However, this is probably the only use of RGB capable lighting I've seen that's pretty impressive. I may look into doing this in my theater if I can test and it isn't distracting. The effect is pretty cool. Don't watch it in the tiny forum window though.

I have Hue in my room fixtures, but have not done anything with the accent options. I hate watching TV in a dark (unlit) room and prefer a very low-level ambient lighting... it takes a lot of strain off the eyes in my experience.
I wish Hue wasn't so expensive, but so far I am really happy with my experience using it and will likely expand on it in my room when I move into the long delayed finishing projects I plan on. (DIY Rack, moving electronics off front wall, DIY Center Stand, proper cable management, Atmos installation, hopefully a paint job.)

Frankly the 800D3s too, but so many people get butt-hurt over B&W. I think they would look great with LED lighting built in! Hell, they should do a Cooperative Crossover with Disney/Star Wars and do a special edition R2 D2 Model!

It's been here for, like, 20 years. *shrugs What's the point?

I haven't seen one comment against the AV industry and Gaming industry getting a little closer and working towards proper integration and compatibility that makes sense. Worrying about built in lighting effect is a red herring, as is the concern that somehow TVs are going to become any more disposable than any other piece of gear being made and sold globally.

One reason I stopped at the PS3 and XBOX 360 was because of the way things never got updated properly for playback and soon enough new specs and codecs come around and devices become obsolete before they ever become optimal. I'm not touching a new console or AVR until late 2022 but still have a new TV itch to scratch as I can improve the TV experience now. But, sure as I buy one, next year's consoles and AVRs will have issues with it. And, isn't that the plan, really?

Xbox 360 sure, but the PS3 is still getting updates and it's well over a decade old. Well, I think it's probably gotten it's last update, but still. That's a VERY long time to keep a device updated in the tech world. Nobody else has done that.

Funny thing is that so many on this thread don't seem to understand that the gaming industry IS the A/V industry. People buy/build dedicated gaming rooms that are full on home theaters all the time. People buy TVs because of how good the picture is and that it has a fast response time for gaming. They 100% want excellent video quality.

I personally have spend a hell of a lot more on my gaming equipment than audio/video. That's only because once you buy an excellent set of speakers, you normally don't upgrade to the latest and greatest. You do in gaming, or you get left behind.

Yeah, loved the original PS3 60g. Still have a sick one in a box somewhere. Used it for almost everything. Loved the separately purchased remote control. It would have been the perfect machine with some audio and 3D playback tweaks. If the government would have allowed the OTA kit, I'd have ditched the TiVo and used the PS3 for recordings as well. Great, now I'm getting another itch. If a PS5 slim comes out and bitstreams everything and has an OTA kit, I'm all over it.

IMO, and sorry to be late to the game, but the Home Theater should be Home Entertainment and fully encompass everything from Audiophile to Gaming to Smart Homes.

But to the last point, smart homes, that would require some standardization. Which doesn't seem to ever happen.

Likewise, I read someone in this thread touting DA Music. I may be showing my age, but many standards over the years was touted as being the next best thing for music and they all faded and we still have stereo.

BTW, recently I read that a lot of gaming stores are dying. That surprised me because it didn't sound like they just meant B&M.
