To the OP.., i like your plan of getting the 2 channel sound right and merging into it, the surround capabilities. I bought my front main speaker pair based on their sound while listening to 2 channel and knowing that the company also produced center and surround channel speakers. As a minimum, you want the mains and the center channel to be at a minimum from the same company and better, from the same family for timbre matching. If you want to listen to multichannel music, buy the surrounds from the manufacturer and family.

Many people disagree with my assessment of a center channel importance but it really depends on how wide the listener position is and how good a soundstage, tne mains throw. While selling a house, I had to simply the basement setup which meant that I had to store the center channel speaker for 3 months. Because the listener position angle from dead center was very narrow, I never missed the center channel at all. My fronts handle that duty as well and dialogue remained as clear and anchored as if the center channel was present. That being said, if one has a wide listener position, then a center channel is needed to anchor dialogue to the display.

I've read in a few different articles offering up the same opinion with the center channel (along with the sub) as being of high importance, at least in surround sound setup. Which makes sense being the center handles hf and dialogue and the sub the sound effects and such. You have any recommendations for brands to match timbre?

You can get by without a center channel using phantom mode if you start out with just the front 2 at first. Whatever you decide on for your front 2, just make sure there's a matching center channel available from the same series you can purchase later when funds open up. I'd avoid mixing and matching different brands or series for your front 3.

What we need to know now is, where's your budget for the first 2 main speakers? I think $500 would be my lowest starting point for books, but if you can bump it up closer to $1000 you can get some pretty nice bookshelf speakers. I wouldn't skimp on subwoofage either. A bookshelf will definitely benefit from adding a good subwoofer.

I was looking maybe 800 tops. Do towers have better Lf capability? Maybe a decent pair of towers will suffice until budget opens up again for sub?

Towers will have better lf capability, yes, but will also cost more. If given a choice with an $800 max budget I'd go for the bookshelf. You can get better overall performance from a bookshelf for the money. If you wanna switch gears to towers I'd consider bumping the budget some more.

Another angle and what I did was get good books, then eventually got the matching towers and moved the books to surround duty. That's a little more of a long game strategy tho.

I'll echo the recommendation for getting a matching centre or at least planning for one. I tried going the cheaper route, getting a V2 centre to pair with V5 mains from Paradigm, but the difference in tone was very noticeable even though they were the same speaker line, just different versions. I was so happy to find the V5 centre second hand later and recommend trying that only if you're on a really tight budget. There's no guarantee that the matching centre will be easily available later. The Paradigm I was looking for dropped off the used market when I had the cash and it was many months before one became available again. Happy camper now. :)

Again Pogre nailed it IMO, perhaps a pair of ELAC DBR62's and a pair of stands so as to adj for tweeter height and ease of placement out into the room. While you won't get the bottom 2 octaves covered like you would like, knowing that saving your $$ will get you there in time.

Another option is the used market so as to get more potential speaker for the $$

It takes a little scouring through ads and some homework but I've found a few gems on Craigslist. I live in a pretty populated area and there are always a crap-ton of speakers on there.

I picked up these IL30 towers for ten bucks!

Oh, and equipment isn't "audiophile", you're the audiophile. If you're interested in high fidelity audio reproduction, you're an audiophile (altho the term can be associated these days with a lot of nutty stuff, too :) ).

I prefer the term audio enthusiast over audiophile as there are far too many negative conatations with the "A" word just like you mentioned.

Yeah I've been checking the fb marketplace and offerup locally, but they seemed to be saturated with Sony and bose and a lot of mainstream audio brands. I tried searching specifically for svs and found nothing. I did find some paradigm, klipsch, and jbl though

Any particular pairs of loudspeakers or bookshelves I should keep an eye out for and relative price ranges?

I'd also check craigslist, hifishark and maybe even audiogon....(plus our own classifieds of course)

Well while I can't speak for the pair in this add...

Vienna Acoustic 'Haydn Grand' , item # 649704965

I have listened to a friends system employing them in a small room set up and was quite impressed. But then I've always like Vienna Acoustics.

Paradigm and JBL have some really nice speakers. JBL have been around forever and have everything from cheapie entry level to 5 or 6 figures for the good stuff. Which ones did you find and how much?

Others to look for would be Infinity, Kef, Focal... and a bunch more. On Craigslist I just type "speakers" in the search then uncheck the category boxes on the side that aren't relevant. That helps narrow it down a little bit. Where I live there's usually just over 1000 speaker ads on any given day. There's a lot of junk to sift through, but when you have nothing better to do sometimes it pays off.

This is a long thread but I think there's some good info in it if you want to go through it.

It's my Craigslist finds thread. I've posted a ton of used speakers I've found over the last year or so and got a lot of good feedback on what to look out for and what to dismiss. I see that Infinity IL series in there quite often for good prices so there's one to keep an eye out for. If you can find a pair of IL40 towers they're definitely worth a listen.

Wow. I search the local craigslist and would be lucky to pull 80 listings of home speakers....maybe 120-150 listings but some will be car, blutooth speakers, etc. Your metro area is 12x larger, tho, and probably wealthier too.

Oh yeah. I have the whole east valley out here. It's like a half dozen cities all right next to each other.

@mixlsplitz1 if you find anything interesting and aren't sure, feel free to post it in that thread and we'll take a look at it. I'm already curous about the JBL you found.
