Marantz AVR REC turn on issue

When I turn my Marantz Slim line AVR Receiver on it makes a audible thump noise. Not through the speaker, but the unit itself. This started a while back and now does it every time I turn it on. Almost sounds like a pop noise when you power on a sub sometimes.. Again this isn't through the speakers noise, it's the receiver itself. Anyone have ideas as I did a google search and came up empty.

I have never heard any kind of "popping" noise directly from any AVR, Pre-pro, or Amp in my life.

That is definitely disconcerting.

It is common to hear a bit of a "click" after the self-test and the speaker relays kick on for an AVR.

Dunno about a "pop" though.

Yeah.. Its a weird electrical bump. The only other time I can remember anything like this is when I use to turn on old tube TV's you would get this same type of sound..

Yeah you're right- there's always a "click" for both powering on and off, but not a "pop". :D

Yeah, just don't ever let that thing stay powered-on unattended.

Yep. Not a click at all.. I turned it on late last night when it was really quite in the house.. And it's a bit loud.. Like I said before, reminds me of the old Tube TV turn on sound.

Maybe it's time to send it in and get it checked out.. Or upgrade
Not good seeing these reports of defective or possible defective units on the forum.

I admit that until my 8 YR Denon AVP-A1HD malfunctioned and could not be repaired by the geniuses at the main repair center, I didn't think too much of these reports on the forum.

But now I'm more aware of these reports. :D

Just don't spend too much money on electronics these days.

I don't spend to much on my AVR units. I try to find close outs. Maybe A4L is the best route. And I might try Yamaha this time around since I have never had them. But the use their own room correction.

Are you 100% sure, like disconnect the speakers to try? There should be no "thump" noise. "clicks" are normal, as suggested by others.

Correct. Already did this. My best description is that Tube TV turn on sound. It's just like that..All speakers disconnected.

You are never allowed to be in the same room with my equipment. You are bad luck. ;)

My wife is like that with airlines. She always runs into mechanical problems. On her last trip a couple of weeks ago on American she had mechanical problems and delays with three out of four segments.

Lol... Yeah. My luck with stuff never seems to dry up on the bad side. I do everything right in my life. Sometimes I tell my wife, maybe my luck would change if I wasn't this way. As my boss has said I am to honest for my own good. o_O

However. This is more of a nuisance than a worry or issue. It just may become one. Maybe I just stick to lower end products, as I never seem to have an issue with them. Only higher end stuff. Or at least high end in my book.

Also another reason I am thinking Yamaha products. They seem to be a bit more reliable than the rest. Even on their two channel products.

Yeah, if you depend on room correction, then stick to Audyssey XT32 or DIRAC or ARC or Trinnov.

I don't use any room correction at all, so I don't care about it.

I was able to get the Yamaha CX-A5100 to sound at LEAST as good as the Denon AVP-A1HDCI withOUT any kind of EQ or Room Correction. So that's why I went with Yamaha - for the supposedly better reliability (per @M Code data).

I was so impressed with the Yamaha that I just became an official dealer for Yamaha a few days ago! LOL. :D

That' how I roll. I love RBH, so I became a dealer for RBH. Same with ATI, Denon, and now Yamaha. :D

Oh wow... Thought you would be on the side of Marantz Denon... I also thought you always used Bass EQ from the room correction. Always been interested in the Yamaha AVR/Integrated amps. After a short lived Marantz, Maybe it's time to look at others. The Marantz hasn't failed yet, but the turn on keeps getting louder and louder. I have also started using the complete AVR system for regular TV. So it's getting a lot of use now.

Well I'm still a Denon/Marantz dealer. :D

But several factors have led me to the arms of Yamaha. :D

I was surprised when I tried the Yamaha CX-A5100.

I used to think that I could never get the same sound quality as Audyssey Dynamic EQ. I have tried numerous times with other Denon units, but I could never duplicate the sound of Dynamic EQ without using EQ.

Thus, I have said so many times on the forum that I could not live without Dynamic EQ! :D

But then came the CX-A5100. And I was so shocked that I could get the sound of Dynamic EQ as before, except now I'm not using any kind of Room EQ or any EQ at all!

Absolutely no EQ or DSP, and yet I can achieve the same dynamic sound as Dynamic EQ.

The stars lined up. Next thing you know, I was meeting with a Yamaha Rep and became a dealer for them. :D

Bottom line - my mind has been opened up once again. I used to think like @TLS Guy when it came to EQ - absolutely no EQ/DSP is best for sound quality. Then I found that Dynamic EQ was better. Now I can get the same awesome dynamic sound I love without any kind of EQ/DSP.

So I guess I have come "full circle" as Kurt would say. Well, maybe almost full circle. :D
