Hooking Reciever to Outboard amp.

Any suggestions on hooking a receiver with no preamp outputs to power amplifier? Running a Yamaha RX V483 with 2 Klipsch reference speakers. Sounds great but will distort at high volumes. Fairly new to the home A/V game but I used to use line level converters to run stock head units to amps in car audio. I really couldn't find any good answers anywhere sooo here I am!

Exactly which model Klipsch speakers are they? Klispch are very efficient speakers and you are likely getting more than enough power to drive them to deafening levels with the Yamaha RX-V483. The limits of how loud they get without distortion is probably more limited by the speaker itself and more power isn't going to help one bit.

The RX-V483 does not (and you know it) have any sort or preouts, not even zone2 preouts so your only practical solution is to use one of those speaker level to line level converters that you referred to. Just make sure you get one rated for the wattage you have in mind. Or try and find an amplifier that takes speaker level inputs.

That's a great point and honestly I hope that's the case. I'm just used to car audio where I always had plenty of power on reserve and could have it cranked with zero distortion. My Yammy is putting out 80 at 2 chn/driven and the Klipsch's are rated for 150 continuous. And I bi-amped the back surrounds which I think does absolutely jack squat. My other question would be since the amp is driving all channels off of 1 power supply would bi-amping the back channels instead of just leaving them be actually be reducing my wattage? I hope that makes sense.

Ha you are correct. I would not have bought it but I got it for next to nothing. Not a bad little receiver but definitely not happy about no preamp. I knew that going in so I can really only blame myself.

Your receiver is likely better than your speakers. That's where the money should be spent...speakers.

What kind of distortion are you getting?

Just distortion at really high levels. Honestly higher than normal listening but it bothers me none the less. Like I said I'm used to having 500 watt mono block JL amps running subs that was over powered. I could always turn it up very loud with little to no distortion provided my gain was adjusted. Home A/V is a different beast!!

Seriously, I have no life.

Just because Klipsch claims 150 continuous doesn't mean it will be without distortion.
Sounds like you are overdriving those speakers and you will in time lose your hearing from those levels.

Which Klipsch speakers? I'm thinking also it's the speakers limits you're hitting more than the amp, max wattage ratings are more a melting point rather than the most wattage they can take and still sound good....

that's true they claim 600 watt max but if you were running 150 continuous that would be coming from a pretty sizable amp and I doubt many are running those speakers with hi end separates as the are just the regular Refrences and not the premiers or II's

Ha that's no kidding mono blocks and subs are easy compared to this home A/V stuff!

Just the regular Rerferences. R28F. Not the premiers or II's. With that said I doubt many people with theses speakers are getting anywhere near the 150. They claim 600 peak but hell I think 150 would be a stretch. I can't see someone buying these soeakers for 900 bucks and spending 6-8 grand on separates to get that big wattage. Makes more sense now.

Well, you don't need to spend 6-8 grand to get big amp power. An avr as pre and a Crown XLS2502 will do a very nice job for about $1200.

ps But I'm not suggesting I'd do that for these speakers, either....at 98dB sensitive (okay maybe somewhat less knowing Klipsch, but still able to get quite loud with modest amps).

IMHO those particular speakers are VERY bright sounding to me and I hear distortion at normal levels when I've demoed them. Granted this is in store with who knows what condition speaker and power amp, but after about 10 seconds of listening I turned them off.

You may just not like the bright klipsch sound. Have you listened to anything else that you liked?

I've read those are are great amps for the money. Any idea what to do with no prelims?
