I own a pair of AV123 MFW15's that still run V2 amplifiers that screech when you power them on then the sounds goes away and they're silent until called to pound out some thump. I honestly thought they would have died by now but they still manage to rumble the floors.

Anybody who knows about these subwoofers (the forum thread I believe was into the hundreds of pages) at a different forum knows they sound fantastic when they work, which for many wasn't for very long.

I had been hoping to afford the "Turbo" upgrade by Motor City Custom audio where they modify a Dayton external amp and it also can come with a very very beefy 15" driver. Unfortunately until recently other things were higher on the priority list.

After purchasing the new Marantz SR7009 I decided to look back into buying the "Turbo" upgrade only to find that Mark Seaton is going to be selling a drop in replacement amplifier that will fit the MFW. The amps are built by the same company that builds his Submersive amplifiers.

I'm ordering two kits (kits include amplifiers, drivers, block off plates and all other hardware), this will take the MFW's to a new level and I can't wait! The MFW's hit pretty hard, these "Turbo" versions should really get the job done. :)

Here is the link to the new drop in amp.

@Klipschhead302

You're willing to throw $2k to save 15" drivers with puny little magnets!?

AV123 went bust for good reason. Take those drivers to the recycling center where they belong and buy some new subs!

I'm confused, where am I spending 2k and saving drivers with puny little magnets? I ordered two kits, I'll go back and edit it so "kit" is explained better but these kits come with new amplifiers, drivers, block off plates and all other hardware. I don't know where I can buy 2 complete subs like these that will hit as hard as these will hit for $1,500.00.

Is it possible, maybe but I happen to like the cabinet design and feel the $1,500 is a worthwhile investment, not everybody has to agree with it.

The drivers I remove will be used in various other projects I have down in the basement, for "junk" they managed to do a decent job and they will work fine elsewhere.

Did you not read his post?

He's ordering two kits which come with new amps and woofers.

My apologies, I must be having a bad day, and not realizing it.

Post pics and tell us how it goes!

No worries, we all have 'em! I'm not sure on the date yet, we are local to each other so when the parts are ready I can just drive by and get them.

If this were anybody else, I would sell these MFW's off or just give them away, knowing the kind of work Mark Seaton does, these are going to be awesome.

I'll take pictures and post them as soon as I can.

Ok hopefully I read this one right: it says in your Atmos/Auro thread that your room is 15'x15'?

Square rooms inherently have horrible bass resonances.

Have you noticed movies with lots of LFE to have 'booms' that seem to last longer than they should? Or that all booms sound the same?

Some corner absorbers may be an additional expense that will help you get the most out your new subs. Any speaker is only as good as the room it is played in!

15x15 sucks, the sweet spot is nice but there are nulls in the side positions, thankfully 99.9% of the time it's just my wife and I. We've had surround with subs since the 90's, having dual subs made it easier to even it out for us. I also don't use Audyssey, not with the SR5003 anyway, the measurements for distance were off, so I manually configured it and it sounds better that way.

With the SR7009 I'll give Audyssey a try, if that doesn't sound well, I have all of the measurements I can re-enter and see how that goes.

As for booms that linger, hasn't been a problem. We'll see how the new subs do, I may need to move them as the output per upgraded sub is supposed to be near double.

With the correct amount of power, your room becomes as much a musical instrument as the sub itself.

There's no question this will be an entirely new experience for you, can't wait to hear your thoughts!

The SR7009 is out for delivery now, having second thoughts about it due to the mentioned lack of HDCP 2.2, I doubt this will be a firmware upgrade, doesn't make sense considering this AVR's 4K capabilities.

I have 60 days to play with the set up, I hope to have the upgrade parts in the next two weeks, I'll post pics and what not as soon as I have it up and running.

Ah the joys of a complete lack of standardization in this industry, coupled with a 'new every two' type of upgrade program, except we the consumer must pay for everything!

I'm sure sound-wise, the SR7009 will be everything you had hoped for. But if you have plans to use 4K TV's/Projection (for 4K you do need a really big screen to get the full benefit) or the forth coming
UHD-Blu Ray you will want to return it.

Please note, HDMI 2.0 does not guarantee HDCP 2.2 compatibility, that still rests in the hands of the manufacturers!

I assume some day I'll make the switch to 4K, I find it crazy this model lacks HDCP 2.2.

Although.... HDCP is copyright protection, essentially. Double check with Marantz, it could possibly be just a software update!

I'm contacting them tomorrow, hopefully it's just a firmware update down the road, I don't own a 4K TV and have no plans on a 4K Blu-Ray player any time soon, I am eyeing an Oppo Blu-Ray player however, they make awesome gear.

I have been really pleased with Marantz blu-ray player. No complains at all and it also matches the look of Marantz receivers! What I have read it is really close to oppo players as well. I myself got a nice deal on my player and it was much cheaper than oppo.

Excellent point, I've been a Marantz fan, well, during the dark years of Marantz that meant I was a vintage Marantz fan until they got bought out again, but being one you'd think I would have thought to buy a Marantz Blu-Ray player, which I did not.

Which model did you buy?

I have the UD5007 as I didn't need the analog capabilities of UD7007 and didn't want to pay almost double the price for it. I'm using just hdmi from my player to my SR7008 receiver.

For the same price as the Marantz, the Oppo 103D (Darbee Edition) has better video processing, period!
