Hey there. I was wondering how I could find out what specific instrument is in a song? I have a PS3 and I'm a huge fan of video game themes. In one of my songs there is a instrument that sounds very 'catchy' to me and I was desperate to find out what it is. To me, it sound's like a piano of some sort but I'm not sure. Is there any app that can listen to a song, read it and tell what instruments are used? I have tried Shazam but that only reads for the name of the track.

Any advice would be appreciated!

If such an app exists, I’m certain it would only work for passages with isolated instruments. It would take some serious computing power to be able to pick out and identify each and every instrument in an orchestral piece, for example.

I’m certain that all game music is generated on electronic synthesizers – I seriously doubt any game composers are going to the trouble and expense of assembling the New York Philharmonic on a massive soundstage when synthesizers these days can replicate the sound of stings and horns with impressive realism.

While there are a few other instruments that utilize a piano-like keyboard, such as the celesta, harpsichord or clavichord, there are no different “types” of acoustic pianos, at least not in the sense that you’re talking. Sure, you have upright pianos, grand pianos, etc. But they aren’t going to sound as drastically different to the untrained ear as say, a Gibson Les Paul or Fender Stratocaster guitar would, of which even non-musicians can readily make a distinction.

Post the title of the disc and the track- maybe someone has it and can help.

With synthesizers, it can be hard to determine what was played but if you look in the disc info, it may show who provided the music, who produced it and who played on it. If it has a date and the name of some of the musicians, it might be possible to narrow the choices, e.g., "___ played a ____-____ synth on everything between 1989 and 2009", or something like that. If you can find a link to the song, it would help, too.

It is a PlayStation3 game called God of War 1, or comment known as God of War or GOW. It was released in 2005. There is no info in the game about anything relating to music. It is the song that play's at the "Blades of Hades" checkpoint. There seems to be no link to the song of the internet. I only wish I had a capture card so I could record it and upload it to my YouTube channel...

I hope I got the correct link here. I record the part in the song with my iPad and I don't have a capture card so the quality won't be good but this will take you to the video I just uploaded to my YouTube channel. You can hear a female singer, drums, flute, and a heck of a lotta bass. Among that is a flowing sound that sound's like a piano. I hope you can hear it, good luck!

If you can find it online and post a link to this section, it would be a lot easier to pick out the intruments- I couldn't hear much detail with my laptop speakers and it would be better if I (or others) could hear it directly from the online source.

Like I said, there is nowhere to find it online because it's rare to find people like me who like video game themes as much as I do. After what the other guy said, and a bit of research, I am quite convinced that electronic synthesisers are involved with this.

Given the video game industry makes money hand over fist, I suspect more scores for games are orchestrated than you might think. Having said that, I know of know what to do what is described here than using your ears and experience with the sound of different instruments.

Great game by the way! Is the sound track available on iTunes or Amazon for download? You might be able to link or upload an attachment if you're that curious...

Unfortunately this track is not available anywhere :/. And thank you, yes, it's an awesome game, it received an official award for best game of 2005.

This is a link to my YouTube channel of the part where the instrument plays. I don't have a capture card and I record only with my iPad but I hope you can hear properly. :)

Here is a video of the level from another person's YouTube channel. You can clearly here a piano like instrument from 1:35 to 2:23 in the video. There is sound FX playing as well but it is still clear. :)

You do know that with modern keyboards they can create/generate/alter any sound, either sampled or created, that they wish.

Well, from the way you keep asking the same question over and over, that really isn't too obvious.

Consider yourself disabused.

Sounds to me like it is purely synthesized. Might have started as a Digital Piano from FM based synthesis combined with a Pad sound. Very little game music uses real instruments.

Sounds like several Pad and choir sounds. If you have a chance, go to a music store and play with a Korg Krom, Roland Phantom, or Yamaha Motif. I would bet 90% of all soundtracks are made with these 3 keyboard/Synthesizers

I found a music only video of the song. The "piano" I was mentioning can be heard from 1:16 to 2:04. I did not think it would be available anywhere but here it is anyway:
