The Yamaha A-S500 Review & Bench Test. Putting To Silence The Doubters & Skeptics

"Kew"-man shared this review and bench test with me for the Yamaha A-S500. It's very impressive (in my 'non' Audiophile mind). This should put to silence, for good, all the haters & skeptics of this "fine" integrated amplifier by Yamaha. In my "beginner" mindset, there needs to be more, many more, of these bench test reviews. They seem to reveal, whatever is being tested, as it is. My request to Audioholics would be to publish copious amounts of "bench test" data to the multitudes!!! Please? :) I'm getting one, period!

Doubters will always doubt no matter what. Period.

I never doubt the SQ of AVR from Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, Pioneer, Onkyo, HK, or even Sony in Direct Mode, regardless of price.

Because much of this is new to me - what is the "SQ", TechGuy?

I can't take credit for that. I posted test review for AS700. The AS500 review was posted by someone else. I'm thinking Anamorphic96.

Okay I give you one. Now I have it in writing that the A-S500's squirrel quotient (learn something new everyday!) will be as good as the Parasound Halo, Bryston, ATI and possibly higher end amps including Boulder's and Passlab's.:D:D

Thanks Peng, that sounds impressive! Would the A-S50'1' fall in that same category?

I am sure it does. If you don't need the built in DAC then go with the 500, unless you can get the 501 for the same price or just a little more (say less than $100 more). Otherwise even if you have need for digital inputs down the road, you can get an external one with more flexibility.

I haven't heard the Yamaha and stopped considering it when I was looking for an integrated or preamp because it doesn't have all of the inputs and outputs I wanted (I have always had integrated amps with pre-out, MC/MM, the ability to drive difficult loads without flipping a switch and usually, more power). However, since you included the Halo series, thought I would comment. I also never used the Denon for more than 2 channels because my room doesn't lend itself to surround and I hate tiny, little speakers. If I ever do a full-blown surround system, it will be just that- full-blown, with all speakers being the same so the voicing will match.

I went from a Denon AVR-2313CI to the Parasound P5/A23 and the difference in sound is drastic, but I'm not sure it's as much from the power amp as it is from the preamp but I know the Parasound provides a lot more impact and sense of space. If the Denon had Front pre-out, I may have just bought a power amp and been done but I had decided that I wanted to listen to my vinyl again without adding another little box for MC input gain/impedance requirements and the Parasound has a nice phono preamp. At some point, I may connect the Denon's Zone 2 pre out to the Halo amp to find out if it sounds as good as it does now.

I know the Denon wasn't top of the line, but it did list at $999, so it had better be decent, for that price.

If the distributors would let dealers hear the equipment for themselves, it would be easier to comment about the sound but I don't like having to buy something without hearing it. Too much like "Eat this- does it taste like it spoiled?".

One thing I have always like about Yamaha's integrated amps and receivers is the variable loudness contour- they're the only ones who have made it possible to change this to more accurately match our hearing at different SPL.

Thanks again highfigh. The 500 is $150 less than the 501, so I am considering "it" over the 501, but i've seen some pictures online of the 'internals' of both of them, and the 501 is much cleaner looking inside than the 500 - but i'm sure that's just a "picky" thing on my part, and that it bare's no significant weight.

Hmm. The pics look the same to me. They are the exact same amp on the inside aside from the DAC board added at the top. Some photos do show the amp with and without the center cross brace which might give that impression.

Thanks 96, i'll check that again. I "would" like the $150 savings! :)

If you have Amazon Prime it might go on sale during Prime Day. (7/15/15) I have seen the A-S500 as low as 329.00 on Amazon.

Thanks for the heads-up 96! My first choice was gonna be "Crutchfield", is "Amazon" trusted for Yamaha products? Is Amazon Prime something that has to be paid for? :)

My 11 years old Denon AVR-3805 seems to sound as good as my A21. I plotted graphs with the Umik-1 and REW to confirm that the graphs for all combinations including 3805 all by itself, 3805 preout+A21, CA 840E preamp+A21 etc., looks virtually the same. Same enough that they practically sit on top of each other such that you can only see one trace.

I did also have an AVR-1912 briefly and I remember it sounded acceptably good at my listening level too. Certainly no "drastic" difference, not like the difference between speakers. Assuming you did volume match the two systems and kept everything else the same, then I have no idea why you heard drastic difference between your 2313 and the P5/A23. I only hear drastic difference between my speakers. There seem to be audible differences between electronics in my systems, but the differences are not significant enough for me to pay too much attention any more.

From what I read about it, it is not anything like Audyssey DEQ. I don't think I would use it.

I Google the pictures and also found they looked the same. If anything, without the DAC board and the extra inputs/connections, the 500 should be "cleaner". Again, if you have no use for those digital inputs, save the $150.
