Refurbished vs New thoughts

I have been looking at the Denon x4000 for the past month. I have found that I can purchase it factory refurbished for almost half.

New
$1,299

Refurbished
$799

Would like to know what everyone's view and experience is with refurbished receivers.

Thanks,
Jeff

Lile T said, a lot depends on from where you buy the refurb. A4L is a reputable place that only sells factory refurbished items and many of us (including myself) have bought there and been very satisfied with their refurbs.

Besides, all refurbs started out ad NIB items.

Personally, I would never buy refurbished electronics. Way too complex to check out every single possible issues.

Open-box are okay. They carry the full factory warranty like-new. Electronics Expo or Onecall or other dealers may have open-box items.

Call Electronics Expo. They have been known to give great over-the-phone deals. They have sold the Denon 4311 brand new for $1225 shipped. With all the new models being released in a few months, prices on the X4000 should also drop. Watch Amazon as well. They are known to sell at 50% off when new models hit the stores. For example, Denon 3312 for $550 brand new shipped when the 3313 hit the stores.

What matters with a refurb is actually customer service IMHO. I recommended a refurb Marantz receiver to a friend off AC4L. He got it and it had a problem right off the bat. He called them and the did not have the same model, so they upgraded him to the newer model as a replacement and exchanged it under warranty. The refurbs usually also come with a full factory warranty same as an open box item and an extended one can be purchased. I've yet to have an issue with an AC4L refurb myself, but refurbs are not without risk, though the idea being that the risk is mitigated by the much lower cost.

If you want new, I agree that picking up last year's model on closeout when the new ones come out is a good way to go, but that window of opportunity is often pretty small. You can check AC4L when the new models come out too, as they sometimes carry last year's models brand new on closeout as well.

Price that Denon around, I know you can get it for a lot less than that new. Personally I'd buy new. Too many moving parts to fail, IMO.

I seen it for less, but they are not authorized dealers/resellers

Call Electronics Expo. They are authorized. Tell the sales guy you've been told of great deals on Denon AVRs.

I have nothing but good things from that company(A4L). My first 7.1 was from them and I never had a problem. Get it with the extended warranty.

With refurb and online purchase, once you're out of 30 day return window, shipping's on you to denons repair facility in New Jersey.
figure on 50.00. That said, I recommend getting the best deal possible from your local retailer ( preferably one that's factory authorized for repairs).
Also, check out every possible functionality when you get your refurb.. I've had two now that had problems outside the return window that, had I looked closer, I might have saved shipping charges.
Cheers, Mac

Yeah, Amazon might be discounting soon with new Denon models on the horizon. And Best Buy price-matches Amazon. So it might be a good idea to get it through Best Buy price match.

Personally, I always get new electronics at discouted prices when new models come out, but I've pieced together 4 budget systems for my friend and they all bought refusbished from A4L; 2 of them perfect, 2 of them with glitches, which were promptly replaced with a working unit. In my case 50/50 on the frist try, but overall, all those units are working fine. I will actually go against my rule and pull a trigger on a refurbished unit for my garage system.

I bought a refurbished Denon 3930CI DVD player and was very happy with it for 7 years. I never had any problems and I also paid half price for it. I would say go for it.

Got my refurb X4000 from A4L in exchange (plus price difference minus discount for my troubles) for a malfunctioning NR818. The replacement was painless and the X4000 has worked flawlessly.

I agree with the folks recommending that you contact Electronics Expo and AVS Forum Store. You might just be able to source a new X4000 for $800.
