Best sub for a 14" footprint area?

Wretched constraint but it's all I got to work with: must fit powered sub into a corner where there's only room for a 14" footprint (grill + feet + amp). That will leave ~2" of space to adjust final placement. In front of all that is wooden room screen and easel stand with the HT/audio components, flanked by Mirage M290 bookshelfs on 2-column steel stands. Room is 1430cf with opening to larger living room, budget < $750.

Anyone got suggestions to fit? Bad, I know - eliminates all kinds of great options, even the SVS PC12-NSD/Plus with its 16.63" footprint.

diy or custom made I guess might be the only option

Pretty much what BSA said. I recently made a sub that was 12.5x11.5 so it would more than fit, you'd just have to sit the amp on top. Thing is, it's a sealed 10" driver and it probably won't provide the output your looking for. However, they are short enough that you could stack 3 on top of each other in that spot and not have them taller than a floor standing speaker.

Jeff Bagby has a kit for a small sub on meniscus audio but I forget the exact dimensions of it.

Thanks for that, i'm open to DIY and definitely don't want to limit on the output. Stacking may be a mess with multiple amps etc - but will all be hidden in corner behind room screen

With the right amp, a single amplifier could power all 3 or however many you want to stack.

True, but since it open to larger room, it might not be sufficient. I am sure a custom build a passive 12" cylinder sub it could fit easily into 14" square footprint
thanks for that too - but with custom/DIY am I out of luck on EQ, DSP and input features (speaker-/line-/balanced inputs)? Or as part of the custom/DIY package will the right amp take care of that?

Not necessarily - In fact with MiniDSP and Dayton usb mic (about $200-250 together) you could get much better DSP results vs build-in system in most subs.
Re: Balanced/unbalanced inputs - Crown XLS1500 has both
