Are they just as good as each other, or is wired always the better choice

Wired is ALWAYS a better choice if performance is your goal.

If convenience is your goal, then wireless may be a better choice.

Are we talking about Internet providers or networking connectivity inside you home?
There are few nuances, but in general - wired is better choice.

Wireless works well for me generally, better than once-upon-a-time for sure. If doing something like a firmware update, only way to go is wired. The rest--meh.

Just got a lg 65uh6150, curious for the 'smart tv' side if I'd notice any difference. Router is a dlink dir-657. any benefits to switching to cat6 (I'm using cat5e for ps3 and firetv) Internet speed test from my phone I get 11 down and 2 up. ping is 33ms (I don't understand the ping)

Your old router is pretty bad for wireless and it's probably very lack on security as well given Dlink didn't updated it in three and half years which is same as saying since dinosaurs roamed the earth, in a security world.

There no benefits (in your case) to switch from cat5e to cat6, unless you plan to run 10Gig speeds at home :)

How fast is your internet if you test from wired computer. I prefer this test: https://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

Your smartphone test could be not accurate if you used your Cell provided network instead of wifi to test it, but even if you did test with wifi on, it still very much will vary on crapton of variables and in many cases you won't get on the wifi top speed avaialbe by your ISP.

Yep. Agree on all points.

I actually did away with my consumer based router and built a Sophos box that I like quite a bit. Frequent updates.

Went with that and a Ubiquity AP and haven't looked back. Fantastic performance for the money.

Simple rule for networking. If you can wire it easily, do it.

Tv is mounted too close to the wall for a ethernet cable, can't seem to find any right angle cables in any stores, o the joys of having to order online and wait for shipping, all for a $5 cable.

I hear you on that, but the adapter will be worth the weight and let you avoid the headaches that can come with WiFi.
