surrounds... on stands or mounted overhead?

right now I have a makeshift surround system and I am getting some new surrounds and was wondering if it was better to put the speakers on stands or mount them from the ceiling and just point the downward.

I would prefer to mount the from above because that spares some room and keeps them out of harms way, but if I am going to notice a way better effect from putting them on stands then I will go that way.

if you can get them on the ceiling in a way that the wires don't make the wife mad, it's a better choice.

It's generally better to have them slightly above the listener's heads. I like to mount them on the side walls, about 2-3 feet about the lisrtener's heads, pointing down at the listening position.
