Receiver: Onkyo TX SR 805. Subwoofer: Polk SWS505. All of a sudden...... quit working. Bought new sub cable. Still doesn't work. Monkeyed around with Onkyo remote. Nope! Puzzled. Any suggestions?

Plug an analog source (CD, DVD, tuner, Walkman, etc...) into the sub's line level input and see if it makes noise. If not, then the sub died. If it does, then the oinker is suspect. Check the manual.

if sub died - moral of the story - don't buy another crappy sub

Are there any indicator lights on on the sub's amp? Check the receiver's settings to make sure you aren't in a "direct" or "bypass" mode that would not send signal to the sub.

The cable is the LEAST likely thing to cause a sub to stop working.

That is a good analyst check, plug another devise into RCA of the active sub.

And play the output from the Onkyo, SW into any amplifier laying about and put any speaker on it to check.

Also what was the last music or film you played? Maybe it had such enormous high peak at one or two frequencies it damaged the sub as that is also another likely common/possibility.
