stereo speaker/hookups problem!

i recently purchased a reciever for use in my garage, from the local goodwill. ($4.99) both speaker outputs work fine in "FM mode". but when i switch to "line" mode, for use with a cd player, one speaker immediatley stops working. both L&R signals from the disc player produce audio in both the L&R line in jacks on the reciever. however, this only woirks when one RCA lead from the CD player is plugged in. once the other is plugged in, the sound of one speaker cuts out. the left lead from the disc player seems to cut out the right. basically, i cant get a stereo image when all is said and done. ideas? or should i not even bother, considering i only paid 5 bucks for the thing.

Things to try.

Swap the l/r connections and see if the problem moves. (Bad cable)

Try another input. Solve problem? (Bad input on receiver)

Same problem? (Bad output on player)

Try another source.
