Screen Innovations Visage Projector Screen Review

Screen Innovations has recently introduced a new revolutionary screen. It is called the Visage (formerly referred to as the ‘Mirage’) and it has the ability to overcome light-filled rooms even with moderately bright front projection systems. The new breakthrough screen uses a patented high contrast filter that covers 60% of the screen surface. This enables the projected image to be reflected by the screen while at the same time absorbing ambient incidental light from other angles produced by windows and room lighting. Check out our impressions of this new screen.

Great review! Could you please explain the 5 degrees limitation further? It looks like it is a retroflective screen.

Viewing angle

I have a similar question about the viewing angle. It seams like the 5 degree projector requirement would also imply that the optimum viewing angle is also limitied to 5 degrees. You make a vague statement about viewing angles but don't give any manufacturer specs.

It looks like an innovative product. However, users who are spending 10K on a projector and 4K on a screen are more likely to have a light controlled HT room then those in the 1-3K projector price range with a HT that doubles as the family room.

Don't be too sure about that, especially with people who live in Florida. I just set up my uncle with a HT System which costs over $60k and he refuses to light control the room it is in. I can't say I blame him since the room is overlooking the Gulf of Mexico ;)

This type of screen would have been perfect for that install.

That is a very nice review and it looks like a very nice product. I wish I could afford one.

On a side note, why are all the pictures so small??? That's one of my pet peves with websites. It's very difficult to see any detail at all with tiny pictures.

Never too late:D What's another $4K after 60k?

Thanks for great review.

I was waiting to hear how its "dark room" performance was. Sounds like you dont lose too much performance.
They claim a gain of 2.0, yet it didnt seem to be any brighter than the carada 1.4. Is that correct?

Also, for anyone interested, I believe you can obtain a DNP supernova screen (actual maker of the screen for screen innovations) at a cheaper price. I dont know if I can list it, but I was quoted a MUCH better price on a 100" DNP.

That's what I'm talking about, as the Visage screen is what I need...without the four grand price!

Hello all
The projector offsets and angles must be maintained because of the filtering properties of the screen. You are correct that vertical viewing angles are compromised, but they fall well within the normal installation parameters.

The screen can’t filter out direct light that is behind projector or direct light that is broadcast on the screen from that angle. The screen really can’t determine the difference between projected light and direct ambient light from that angle. The screen has no AI although that would an interesting concept a photosensitive screen, Any investors out there?;) Horizontal viewing angels are about 25-30 degrees. Considering this is a high gain screen that’s pretty good. We had a house full of guests to watch Nascar some were sitting at about 30 degrees and we had no complaints;)

Another consideration is most projector installs fall within the 5-degree specification anyway unless the individual has super high ceilings and uses projectors with allot of lens shift to compensate.

The gain figures are correct, I would not say the Image was brighter on the Carada I felt that in a totally dark room the image looked a little more dynamic and the colors looked more natural on the Carada white screen.

This looks interesting, I cant comment on that screen until we review it but I am going to assume that something is different possibly build quality or material There are similarities in regular screens as well. Stewart, Da-Lite, Draper, Carada and VuTec are all at different price points But go compare the Stewart to the VuTec and you will see why the Stewart cost so much more;)

My schedule as been pretty hectic but I will try to keep an eye on this thread I hope you all enjoyed the review.

How much exactly?

I received a flyer from Visage and it's actually 5% of image height above and below the screen. According to the chart to maintain a minimum of 20:1 ratio for a 24 ft candles ambient light on a 60" 16:9 screen requires a 1300 real life ansi lumen!
