Receiver vs. preamp/amp combo

Huh, I just got a new Yammy. It has a combined 90,000 uF of capacitance. It has 2 larger higher voltage caps and then 7 smaller ones with the same uF with lower voltage.

are you sure seth? even the 2600 have two 18000 caps ... (as per AH review)
maybe the other smaller caps aren't for what we think they're for

They may be 18000, it was hard to see.

The smaller caps are in line between the power supply and the board with the two other larger sized caps. They probably are some type of pre filter.

Here is a link to the Outlaw 1070 review by Home Theater Mag:
http://www.hometheatermag.com/completesystems/106outlaw/

They measured the following numbers, all at 0.1% distortion:
2 Channels/8 ohms: 73.7W
2 Channels/4 ohms: 84.0W
5 Channels/8 ohms: 69.2W
7 Channels/8 ohms: 51.5W

Not really anything remarkable, almost disappointing with the 2 channel/4 ohms measurement. If I remember correctly, the $1000 receivers rated at 100W by Denon, Pioneer, Yamaha, etc. will output significantly more power in 2 channel mode for both 8 ohms and 4 ohms. Doesn't mean it may not be a great sounding receiver and worth every penny, only that the power output numbers are nothing special.

true, but I find that kinda' funny, because in reviews on Amazon.com I see remarks like: "only Harman/Kardon and Marantz tell you how much power you'r realy getting".

Of course. I bet they are fans of both:D That is why I am skittish about reviews unless it is accompanied by some verifiable, hard numbers:D

ps; since you are following this and have your attention:) I think you might enjoy this link too. Use google translation feature:

"WERE NOT DIFFERENCES OF SOUND between system MARK LEVINSON and YAMAHA PRO", suddenly I don't feel so bad about having a Yamaha. :D

I understand they do that. I guess the best way is to bench test, unfortunetly we don't have resources to do so most times.:D
But you can find tons of reviews from the following links, including some Outlaws. Most of reviews include bench test results.

Just be careful when comparing results from one magazine to the others, as their methodologies may be be the same.
