Putting together a system- need sub

I'm currently have a Yamaha RX-V667 that is running Cambridge Soundworks Newton series M80 bookshelf fronts and a CSW MC155 center channel. I'm just doing a 3.1 system for now and I need a sub. I want something that is good for movies as well as music. I was thinking about the Newton Series P300HD sub but there doesn't seem to be a lot of reviews on it. It's attractive to me because it's only 500 and it should blend well with the other CSW speakers but I really don't know anything about subs so is there something out there better than this sub for the same price?

SVS has a "b" stock PB12- NSD for
$529.00 that would likely eat the sub you mentioned and not break a sweat.

The Epic Legend should also be out soon and would do the same.

I would also take a look at the HSU VTF-1 Subwoofer and that will make 3 subs that are superior to what you are looking at.

We really need to know the size of your room to be more specific.

that sub is already out of stock... just becuase something is still showing on the b-stock page, doesn't mean they actually have it in stock.

I'd go with something from an internet direct subwoofer specialist. Figure out the total room size and contact Elemental Designs, Epik, Hsu Research, and SVSound and have them each size you a sub to fit the room. I'd just be sure to pick something that is rated down to 20hz for movies.

Because that would be too logical????

Thanks for all the good input. My room size is 25' L X W 15' H 7'5". So it's a front to back room with the kitchen over looking it.

Went to the SVSound website. Their prices are really good. Do you think the PB10 would big big enough or too big for my room size?

With a room that big, I'd probably go with at least the PB12 NSD. But email SVS with your room dimensions and get their opinion. They will get back to you right away, and they won't try to oversell you.

+1, and include the dimensions of any attached spaces that open into the room.

So of these companies:

Elemental Designs, Epik, Hsu Research, and SVSound

Is there a preference as to the best or are they all about the same?

Also, I just looked at the HSU VTF-2 MK3 and the back has connections for high level inputs from the amplifier and outputs to the L & R speakers. Does that mean I have to connect my L & R channels out of the Sub? I thought I could just connect to the sub with the output from my receiver?

Doesn't mean you have to, just another connection option. For instance if you were using a stereo receiver with no sub output, you could still connect the sub with your speaker wire.

Great, thanks. For a minute there I thought I was gonna have to rewire everything.

Been doing a little research and for $500-600 from the companies recommended above and I think one of these might do it for me.

Elemental Designs A3-300 $600 goes down to 18Hz

SVS PB-12 $600 goes down to 18Hz

HSU VTF-2MK3 $500 goes down to 18Hz

Anyone have any experience with these subs or companies? Read a review on the A3-300 and it seems like a very impressive sub. I have a feeling that any of them will sound great but would like some input.

Thanks

I saw a PB12-NSD on audiogon today for $400 obo plus shipping, I'd jump on that if I were you. I've purchased 3 subs from SVS, and the are top notch, with superior customer service. I've dealt with elemental designs, but only for car audio, and have always been pleased with them, but never dealt with HSU.

Well I pulled the trigger on a PB12-NSD. I'm sure this will be more than enough for me. Can't wait to get it.

Outlaw Audio is having a sale, you can get the LFM-1 EX for $550 shipped. That would have been the one to get, I thing it would have hit harder than the VTF2, PB12, or A3-300, while being cheaper than all three.
